David, I'm confused... We had breakfast together and you told us about the car. I asked if I could stop by and take pics and you said yes. When I came by I talked to you and even helped you get your keys out of your SUV after they got locked in it, so you knew I was there.
I didn't specifically ask you if I could post the pics online, but I post all my pics online so I thought you knew that.
I'm very sorry if it caused any problems. I talked to the owner today and he didn't say anything about it. I didn't mean any harm. I'm just an enthusiast and I really don't understand how anyone can't like this beautiful car.

Me neither, but you're posting it in the wrong forum. Vintage has a low tolerance for anything non official.

But is it really the wrong forum? The VIN plate and title say 250 GTE, where else should I post it?

I can't help it that some won't like it. I posted it for the people who will like it.

Um...I don't see why it can't be here. It is a GTE...

Of course technically this is the right forum, but people here don't like customizations. The showroom might be a more welcoming place.

I don´t like it and I have two Ferraris. Real ones, not like this one.

    Cheers,

Following car may be of interest! It was built in Australia on a wrecked 365 chassis supplied and would have not been restored had this project not come to fruition.

Nice rear and rear 3/4 view. The 2 bonnet bulges look a bit funky for my taste.

    GTAmerica,

My initial reaction is that it is a near miss on the styling. It just doesn't look right to me even though I can see the Lusso, 275GTB, etc. influences. However, I do appreciate that it is an original design.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I have to agree. I think this one doesn't quite work. You can see all the styling elements that were trying to be used but they all look a little awkward together.

Proportions and details are wierdly off...it looks like a kit car. Interior is nice and businesslike, I like the green leather.

Regarding the engine, what is the carb induction doing positioned on the cylinder heads, between the camshafts?

If it's any consolation to the naysayers regarding the GTO spyder, I'm pretty sure that Hilary Raab (of the Raab Red Book) has one.

365GTC/4, 365 GT 2+2's and 400/412's had the intake in the middle of the head to allow for the use of side draught carbs to lower the bonnet line

    It could be great, but............

From the back it looks very like the 1959 Lotus elite - and the roof seems too small.

Don't know about that green leather with yellow paint - maybe a reference to Australia's sporting colours?

But from the front.............repeat after me 'one bonnet airscoop good, two bonnet airscoops bad'. There was a reason the 365 & 400 engines had the intakes/carbs horizontal:- to get the low bonnet line, which those huge trumpets spoil.

    Each to his own, however.

    Paul M

edit: here it is with one airscoop and a longer/higher roof

Thanks...I knew about the sidedrafts but not how they worked.

That does make for a hotrod setup with the downdraft carbs installed.

Wow, I think it looks great, the twin scoops are very distinctive. All I would change is to have a slightly lower rear window with more rounded upper corners, and some nice deep Borranis. It is much nicer than any kit car.

I see cars like these as comparable to "new" Cobras. I wouldn't mind having a testarossa or gto replica (as long as it was powered by ferrari). I could drive the tires off of it and not have to worry about it. It's probably great fun to drive!

I think the difference is that this is based on a genuine Ferrari Chassis and running gear, and with the exception of the MkIV AC Cobra which I believe has now gone out of production you can't buy a genuine AC Cobra only kit cars without a genuine AC chassis

Since I didn't see anyone else mention it, Frank Beard's "250 GTO Spyder" began life as a 250 GTE Series II S/N 3919. I understand that one other was built, also based on a GTE.

Is this 3919, or does anyone know its serial number?

Would it be possible to have a separate sub-forum for these things?

IMHO they are not a "specific model", and are most certainly not vintage (thru 365 GTC4).

    Respectfully submitted,

    Julio

    Julio,

They are the mortal remains of 250 GTEs - sad but true.

Car looks great, seems to be well put together. At the end of the day it is a 250GTE re-body. nothoing more, nothing less. To me, no different than the Breadvan which is a 250 SWB re-body (and in my eyes, the breadvan is a little on the ugly side) and numerous Daytona spiders. The only difference is age. In 50 years, this car may be as accepted as the Breadvan. At the end of the day, you pay your money and you get to do what you want. Whether you like it, or accept it is up to you. Personally I wouldn't buy one as I like originality, however it is a fine looking re-bodied Ferrari.
