Bruce--I am still in my office and after reading the post I see what you mean. Sorry about that. It should have read;

I have had 3-TRs-1-87 & 2-88s. The 87 had no problems with the retractors but both 88s did. The Ferrari dealer repaired the left side and then did the right side a few months later on the first 88. The 2nd 88 gave me the same problem with the left side and the dealer told me that Ferrari was no longer repairing them at no cost.

Dunno--go figure--

Robert

That should be clearer--

Thanks Bruce,

We had a couple of power outages last week which probably caused it not to go thru.

I agree with Patrick, that is the way I'd like to dot it too. Seems like it could be done fairly easily. Anyone converted over the the Euro method?

Judging by the parts manual, it looks like the Euro TRs had standard 3 point belts - do the US models have the Euro belt attachment points in the door sill area and in the post behind the doors? If so, what would it take to simply add Euro belts and disconnect the electrics but leave the mouse track?

(long) We recently repaired the passive seat belts on a 1998 Testarossa. The problem we found after much fussing around with the system weas that the electronic module which controls the belts was malfunctioining. The module gives the shoulder belt mouse (shuttle) a certain number of seconds to travel to the back of the door opening and then signals the unit in the console to tighten the belt. Over time the electronic components in the module deteriorate and the time given to the shoulder belt mouse is reduced. What happens is the module tells the belt to tighten before the mouse has fully applied the belt. This puts a tremendous strain on the mechanical parts of the belt mechanisms and the system destroys itself. The system should have been designed with a limit switch so that the belt could not tighten until the mouse reached the end of the track and signaled the tightening mechanism - all clear. Barring that, the module should have had a QUARTZ timer. The whole system is very Fiat (as in cheap).

Installing a new module (there are two, one for each belt) does not fix the problem. The replacement modules were made at the same time as the ones in your car, are just as old and suffer from the same electronic component deterioration.

The solution we came up with was to design an electronic timer which piggy backs on the seatbelt module and gives the shoulder belt mouse more time to do its thing before tightening the belt. We also had to repair the self inflicted mechanical damage to the system but wound up with working, reliable belts.

Our customer wanted to keep his car original but to rip all that junk out and install manual belts. It would require some upholstery work to the interior door opening trim to make it all look nice but the effort would be well worth it in my opinion.

can the dealership refuse to fix it if someone else (a third party) has worked on the belts and therefore "modified" them?

Any news on this topic? Is there a chance of getting my '87 TR's seat belts fixed, even if I have to partially pay for it?

I would call both and reference this recall and see what their reaction is. If needed you can then call FNA, and last call NHTSA.

Guy's; If you were not aware, years ago there was a recall for the mouse trap seat belts. if your is inop Ferrari is still on the hook to replace it. If they give you problems, NHTSA should be able to convince them that it needs to be done. Potential for a very large lawsuit if you were in an accident and they did not repair a recalled safety item.
