Take it over to the Swamp Buggy track and let her loose. Just watch out for the Sippi Hole.

When I was younger a friend had a 68 camaro we used to work on. One day we dropped a built 350 in it and we wanted to check it out (of course) The car had the lights out bumpers off etc. oh yeah open headers too, he took it down the street and back and shut it down. About 15 minutes later a cop pulls up as this was a residential area so someone complained but luckily the cop was a car guy and talked to us a bit and let us off. So basically Martin if you get pulled over it most likely would depend on your attitude and the cops. When you went for your dealer's licence did they give you any info on matters like these?

It has none of that. Maybe brake lights but that is pretty much it.

What about turn signals and brake lights? I would imagine you would have to have those.

Yes. A local exotic service has taken 512BB LM's down the block for "tuning" as well as some vintage Ferrari F1 cars with exactly that; dealer tags. They once had a bike cop pull up and asked him about the legality, his comments were that as long as you obey the speed limits and rules of the road, it's not illegal. Although, he did qualify his statment by saying that it would be best to keep the "joy rides" short.

This is in San Diego, CA.

Probably not. But if you find a road that you can see if the Police are coming, you might be able to get away with it. We used to use a highway where we could see if they were coming, and we could then use it, and be gone if the police arrived because of the unmuffled vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Same attitude might work for you. Do you have a friend on the Police? Maybe they can provide assistance.

If you get caught with the Dealer's tag on the obviously illegal vehicle, could be more trouble than you bargained for.

Martin you can do anything you like, however I don't know if that is legal. I can't imagine the consequences of getting caught would be too severe though. You are a dealer, you are just testing a car for a short trip, big deal. I know a dealer in Oklahoma City who drives a few non-street legal cars daily with dealer tags. He has never had problems.

Does it have turn signals, brake lights and a horn? If so the answer is probably yes. What about inspection, does having dealer plates exempt you from having to have an emmisions legal car?

Now what I am writing here sounds stupid and in some sense is. My race car is probably getting ready to be fired up. When she runs we need to take her for a spin to see what else is wrong with her. She has not run for a few years and we need to check suspension and other things.

I was thinking of driving her on a stretch of paved road in the FDt. Myers region where there are no homes and no traffic. But for prevention I would put my dealer tag on the car. Can I do that?
