Mike,

Just had the new SRT dyno'ed with 1,100 miles. Wanted to make sure I didn't get one with bad valves. Hadn't run it much over 4k rpm's during breakin, so the computer hasn't learned the sweet spot yet. Talk about a horizontal torque curve starting at 2k. :-)

Ben, you're right about the sound...although, I must admit, the GTS, with its center-mounted exhausts, sounds pretty nice from the driver's seat.

I have not driven a 575 yet...

Viper sure dosen't sound like a 550 (with a Fuchs/Cargraphic exhaust at least :-) though it's got it's own signature sound (with the v10).

The 575 is supposed to be even better in straight-line speed and grunt.

PS: Isn't the gated shifter the most amazing thing you've ever seen? They always continue to amaze me.

Mike, I have...but it was slightly modified for track use. Specifically, it had a race seat & harnesses, race brake pads & fluid, super-light flywheel, some very nice suspension & clutch work, and had a somewhat freed-up input & exhaust. However, it was on street Michelin Pilot Sport tires. I have a friend who has begun competing in the Michelin Viper Challenge, and he let me try his car, which is pre-ABS.

My impressions are similar to Adam's: steering is a bit heavier (better, IMO), brakes are very good (with race pads) but pedal travel is longer (bad) and no ABS (neither bad nor good), clutch take-up was great (but had been modified). The car REALLY gets up and goes: its normal mountain of torque is enhanced by the lightened flywheel & opened up intake & exhaust. Shifting is very nice. Headroom sucks. The car handled EXTREMELY well despite street tires, but remember, it had had some major suspension work done, so I don't know how it compares to a stock GTS. I really didn't care for the HUGE center tunnel and the tiny footwell, but the pedals seemed set up just fine for heel-and-toe.

Dave,

Have you ever driven a Viper GTS?

What did you think?

I drove a Viper for a few years and recently drove a 550 and I'd have almost the same comments as Adam. Interested in someone's feelings for whom the Viper is the "test drive" car.

Adam, interesting observations. Thanks!

FYI, Euro 550's have 485 hp; US cars have 479. Neither have 500. However, the new 575 has 515 hp in Eurpoean trim.

The car was fun, felt fast but not as fast as my car. The interior was very nice and high quality. I like the looks of the Viper GTS over 550.

Adam,

How about "seat of your pants" fun? Did the 550 outscore the Viper?

I think Vipers are extremely good value right now. Although with limited Viper experience (seat time), I felt they have a fantastic fun factor. And I personally like the older ones better than the SRT's (except for the competition models).

Cheers

My partners father loves Ferrari's, he offered to take me for a ride in one of his cars and later insisted that I drive the car. So I went for it. The car was a Euro edition so it had 500HP and an adjustable suspension with a push of a button. It felt fast and it was 6-speed. I was very impressed with the TQ since I expected to be disappointed there. I loved the engine sound...the car felt stiffer than my Viper, the clutch had one 10th of travel of my car, the brakes had very little travel and vere very good. The gated shifter looked like it would be hard to shift but it was very easy. The steering was a bit lighter than my car.
I was very impressed with the car and I'm a Lambo fan and was never crazy about 550. If I had the $ I would love to own one. The guy was very cool and he drives his car, he put 16K miles in 2 years.
