Jay,

Explain how this happening on new Ferraris like 360's, 575's, 550's, 355's, etc... Some of these cars are less than 2 years old & still burn up. It's becoming too common to see on EBAY as an "easy fixer-upper". I remember someone posting the drummer from Areosmith was badly burned when his 355 spyder caught fire at a gas station. I think gas poured onto the header & a bad fuel line is what started it. Why won't Ferrari correct this issue? I guess it's just up the owner or mechanic to keep it properly maintained.

Andreas, I don't think cooling had anything to do with it. Most causes of fire in Ferraris is old fuel lines. They may look good on the outside but inside they are cracked and ready to let go. Mine looked fine until I cut it open! Everyone should change their fuel lines and coolant lines, if they are original they are too old!

I think the GTO was the first Ferrari that sold over list price. Here are another 2 pictures of a crashed GTO, don't know what happened. They were on one of those crash-sites, but I found it through google, not because I like to see crashed cars.

250.000 DM was the price of the 288 GTO, when it was factory new sold. If you want to buy a 288 GTO today, you have to pay more than 250.000 Euro (nearly similar to $).

Here is one offered at a dealer near my hometown.

The Horror!

BYW Hans Hansen knows about #273. He told me the story while at the Peterson Museum. I should tell it here... But where has he been?

Here is the story on the German dentists' GTO.
250000 DMark is 120000 US Dollar...must be the estimated value AFTER the fire :-)

Interesting 'causes of death'. I thought people would more often crash them than the cars just burst up in flames. Makes me wonder, whether Ferrari overdid it with filling up that engine compartment. Maybe not enough cooling?

Ferrari Of Ontario had one. They did a complete service on it(ya right) and the mechanic took it out on a road test on the highway. The car caught fire and burnt to the ground. It was in the papers and even on the news. Apparently Ferrari head office found out about it, and sent Ferrari Of Ontario a nasty letter.

I know of a friend of a friend that wrapped his fathers around a tree about 16 years ago, not sure what happened to it or what vin. There are probably others.

BTW There will probably be a mint condition one at the FOC holiday party this sunday in piermont ny. I know the owner who normally drives it down.

Not to dwell too much on this dark subject, but I was always wondering what happened to the 272 cars. I bet some of them got wrapped around some trees given their power. And since there are so few of them, I bet it made the news.
Does anybody know?
