It all boils down to naming a park after his mom |

I've actually used Meigs at least 6 times this year alone. My brother just bought a condo in the Hancock building and we made several trips to Chicago 'shopping' for his place. AOPA's suits are making headway. Yesterday the FAA gave notice to Daley that it is formally investigating his blatant disregard for Federal Law and FAR Part 157. I don't think we'll get the airport reopened - but sure don't want to see other close to city airfields suffer the same fate. Noel - just hope they don't close the harbor as well. I'm sure the next fear point the Mayor will use is that a nice yatch with a dirty bomb will do more damage than a 172. Then he'll make a push to turn the harbor into a nature reserve since it's between the parks anyway. |

A friend of mine wrote a harsh letter to Crains about the odd ways of the Mayor to close down Meigs. They called him back and asked him, whether it is ok to publish it. He of course agreed. Well guess what? This the week, and there isn't a single word about the whole deal in Crains...

It is not going to be a park. It will be the biggest casino you've ever seen. It will have Pink walls and .99cent lobster buffets. Oprah ( and Betty Loren ) will love it !!!! |

I can relate Noel: A friend of mine has an apartment onto the park and I loved to sit out there in the summer time watch the planes come in low for a landing. Also Meigs Field is the default airport in Microsoft's Flight Simulator, hence it is known to thousands of simmers around the world (who all tried at some time hit the Hancock with it...). |

i think having meigs as a park will suck for me personally(selfishly), it will make that whole area a lot more crowded and i'll miss hanging on my boat watching planes land and take off. |

Actually, Noel, you should be relieved that you can now enjoy your boat terror-free ;) |

Jack, all very true. I've met the mayor myself a couple of times and always like the guy, but this ain't right. With the same logic London, Rio and Hong Kong would have to close some of their airports. Guess what, they won't. Because they don't have a mayor who needs an additional park. Noel, from what I've seen about the park project (several years ago) your boat is probably safe. I don't think they're gonna touch the harbour, but just turn Meigs into an extension of Grant Park. |

I've met the Mayor and always respected him, but this is just nuts. His argument that Meigs is a terror threat is completely hollow. With all the surrounding airports, anyone wishing to cause havoc via the air can fly out of any number of airports, from Gary to Milwaukee. Have any of you ever encountered someone in the city who has been living in terror of privately flown planes? Not me. (The airplane thing's been done. What concerns me more is the multitude of delivery trucks circulating throught downtown every day.) The Mayor is just damn lucky there wasn't some pilot flying in on Monday morning with a problem who chose Meigs as his bail-out point. |

Well, Daley always wanted to convert that whole Meigs Field area into an extension of Grant Park. Actually a very nice design and I like Parks. However the biz people (for whom this field mostly is) always lobbbied against it and the field was granted another extension in life just a few years ago. Now with 9/11 Daley was pushing for a no fly zone over the city. Made sense to some degree, although it is hard to imagine how a Cessna could take down Sears Tower (commercial big airliners still are allowed to fly over the city). But now we know why he pushed for that: With the logic, that there is a no fly zone, Meigs lost its reason for being and so he concluded it can now be shut down. He even went as far as to say, that it posed a threat by its mere existence. Well how about that? If a terrorist really wanted to do an encore of 9/11 there are plenty of air fields left around the city to take off from. So in essence Daley used 9/11 as an excuse to get his flowers planted. Completely ignoring all democratic rules. And Blagojevich even backs him up (note, that Blagojevich 'grew up' politically under Daley). I loved our Mayor for many years, but lost all respect for him with this act of dictatorship. I hope he is going to loose the next election. |

I too was wondering what the hell is going on there. At thia point I have lost a lot of respect for Daley. All in the name of security my ass, 18 planes at the airport when this took place, people showed up for work only to find out the airport is now closed. It does suck |

Sorry, I know this is way Off Topic, but I'm so incredibly shocked and pi%%ed off, that I had to vent: What the hell was the Mayor thinking taking Meigs Field apart?! I realize he always hated that airport, but that gives him no authority to just take down a runway. That's dictator like behavior. What's next, he doesn't like Sears Tower and has it imploded? I'm very stunned and saddened as I always loved Meigs (I'm not a pilot, but thought it neat to have this field next to the harbor). |
