Thanks everyone for the input. I will carefully remove mine and then decide what to do, clean up the old ones or buy new. |

Steve, BTW, new rear lights can be see at http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/281490.html . After approximately two DECADES i feel good they were replaced. Note the clarity and color of the new units versus the ones that are on your car. Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin |

Get all new lens; I think mine were $90 each at T. Rutlands (2 years ago). My amber ones were starting to turn dull from age. I sold my set of four old ones on ebay (probably someone building a kit car) for $200. Net cost: $160. for the new set. 7mm deep socket is correct. |

The appropriate tool for removal is a 7mm deep well socket. I did NOT use a ratchet so I could have greater control of the twisting force. Just hand tighten gently till you feel very slight resitance. Good luck... |

Steve, Replaced ALL lights and gaskets on the '85 308GTS QV that is here. Deep socket (6mm i believe). Only took me about 60 minutes to do all four lights (replacing). If you are removing the lights, i'd suggest getting new gaskets. Got mine from T. Rutlands as i recall, though am sure Ferrari UK has them as well. Don't be worries about over tightening as a little common sense goes a LONG way and they do have plastic gaskets so you DO NOT want them overly tight anyway. If it was me (and it was), dump $600 or so and just get all new lights/assemblies/gasket. But that is just me i guess, like having new things :-) Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Did not mean to scare you away from this project. Just a warning to be careful because these lights are delicate especially if old/ or original. Do this carfeully and you will be fine. You might want to shoot some WD 40 on the threads before going in there with socket to loosen them up. Once they are off, clean very well. You do not want to do this repeatedly. |

Geeez, Alan. Now I'm afraid to touch the darn things. Did yours break trying to remove them or were they hit from behind? |

You'd better watch out! They definately suffer from heat exposure over the years. I've had to buy a new full set after some minor damage. The old ones crumbled in my hand! Lenses make great Fcar ashtrays though. It's a hassle but I'd swab around them with some detailing effort. |

Thanks Dave, sounds easy. Earlier I saw a post with a pic of the lenses in a dishwasher. That planted the seed to get mine cleaned up. |

be very careful when re-installing. If you over tighten you will break the studs out of the plastic housings and face buying some very expensive new tailights. If they are original they are probably brittle from exhaust heat. Proceed with caution. I think its 6 or 8 mm, will repost later. I have one of the old ones with broken stud in my basement.

From behind, remove the nuts. You will likely need a deep socket. I forget the size..... |

It looks like the tail light lenses on my '78 308 have never been removed. They need to be cleaned as does the area around them. I am interested in any advice or the procedure to remove them. Thanks. |
