Poking around on this rainy day, and i was cleaning the shift knob.....

    (How dirty can one get?)

Then i noticed something. you can actually see it in the first picture. The natural center of the shift lever ISN'T in the middle of the gate. it's biased to the left. Here's another picture:

Is there a way to adjust the lever back to the natural center? I've cheated the gate as far over as I can, and there's still some side load on it. It only makes sense that the natural center of the lever should be right down the middle of the gate.

I believe you would need to adjust the shift shaft that goes to the transmission

Just looked at the parts diagram and see 348 are cables and totally different than a 355. Sorry, Steve

    No worries. :D

on the plus side, my car is mysteriously missing the cover back there. (bottom of fuel cell/front of engine...the wide one) scored one on ebay last night.

    348's don't have a full undertray.

Steve, I noticed when I looked down in the shifter gate, there was a little sponge looking thing in there. Is that supposed to be in there? I can get a photo tonight if that description doesn't make sense.

From the standpoint of linkage, maybe. From everything else, probably not ;)

The sponge piece is an earlier car thing. Pretty useless. It is superseded by part 52 on the drawing on later cars. A rubber bellows .Its a good upgrade to do..
