I will find out what they recommend and use on their cars. They say Redline gets thick and gummy and prevents oil from reaching all areas so you get early wear. I saw my transaxle and I had been using shockproof for 30,000 mi and with Redline MTL the last 1500. The inside looked like a lot of areas had this thick Teflon coating on a lot of surfaces. I will post pictures when they send them to me. Except for 3rd gear syncro ring the rest of the transaxle looked good.

See my post #83 above, almost all Euro spec info. Agip (ENI) no longer produces any of those?

    I can't actually.

I bought it along with ENI engine oil and the shop (Evans automotive in Columbus Oh) was kind enough to fill some jugs with the gear lube as they said otherwise they only had it in 5 gallon containers.

Okay, now that makes sense. Redline advises to not use Shockproof in anything with a pump or filter because it will clog. I've been using regular Redline gear oils in transmissions, transaxles, and diffs for 25 or more years and never seen any instance of them getting thick/gummy. I'd still like to know what K-M likes though.

Yes, the AGIP Rotra LSX 75W90 is available over here, I checked.
    Thanks.
Any reason known to anybody why I should NOT use this oil in a 355?

Good oil. I'd use it but the AGIP USA distributor can't be bothered selling it.

    Ya thanks Bob.

I guess i am sticking with Redline and will be replacing syncros, Crap!!

Having said that you were using redline mtl and i am using 75 90 NS so i think this would be better but not sure.

After re reading all rifledrivers posts i am thinking the syncros are maybe just ware items and I gues if they last for 60k so be it.

The excuses people make because it's a Ferrari. Syncros going at less that 100k miles is due either to abuse or crap oil.

The syncro ring did not fail from abuse. I have had the car almost from new which now has just under 60,000mi. I think oil recommendations are all over the place, but I think the proof of which one is best is maybe not how it shifts at the moment but longevity. Many owners are recommending one oil but are putting 500 miles a year on their cars. Not a test of which oil is best.

75W90 NS is not Shockproof. It is, however, what Redline recommends for the car. It should not cause you any problems. Just don't use Shockproof-- Redline specifically warns against it.

    Or crap syncros.

I have rebuilt gear boxes from a lot of different cars and a few trucks. Since going to brass syncros Ferrari's are the furthest from being a robust design I have ever seen.

And the abuse thing? That defines the day to day life of a lot of Ferrari's. Some people seem to think that is what they are designed for. I have said many times, Ferrari's don't usually wear out, they get broken.

I just did tranny overhaul to my 348, due to clutchshaft lockring failed. Im going to use gl-4 becouse it works better with synchros. I dont know why ferrari suggest to use of gl-5 on it?

All I can say is that if it doesn't say Shell, Pennzoil, Mobile or Castrol on it, I don't use it. So far it's worked well for my 308. Seems to be working fine in the 355 too.

They switched mid production because the oil Shell was selling them changed the formula from 4 to 5.

Guys have been all over the map with oils in general. It doesn't really matter. 1st choice synthetic or not. 2nd choice what is easily available. 3rd choice viscosity. 4th is it rated for your car gl4 gl5 etc. Once those boxes checked just use it. Ferraris are the worst gearboxes on the planet. For some strange reason they can have a functional affinity for a specific oil. Hunt until you find what shfts smooth . For me 99% of the time mobil1 because it works and I can get it 5miles away. People way over think it. And for all the lightweight shockproof haters there is a huge contingent oft 348/355 gyuys that swear that is THE gearoil to use. We are not seeing gl5 gear destruction nor excessive brass in the blackstone oil lab tests.
