Ferrari of Washington (DC) quoted me $350 + $900 for a compression check for a 400. That compression check really seems expensive. Does this sound accurate?

$350.00 should be plenty. All you have to do is remove the wires from the plugs, remove the plugs and screw in the test gauge and crank it over then reassemble. Takes about an hour total. They must be charging the rest for paper work.

A "leak down" test is more comprehensive and can be performed at any shop you'd take your Ferrari to.
I'd also think that a Ferrari dealer might not be the most familiar with these cars.
And, yeah way too much $$. This engine is easily accessible for a leak down test, it's maybe an hour and a half work.

Can a leak down test be conducted on these engines without backing off valve clearances?

Most cars have exhaust/intake valve overlap so a leak down can't be performed correctly unless the valve clearances are opened up.

    Good day Al,

If you always had intake/exhaust valve overlap you would have no compression within the combustion chamber and the cylinder/engine would not run. The objective is to have both valves closed so that any measured leakage is representative of the engine sealing components (valve seats, rings, head gasket, etc). That being said you can do a leak down test on these engines without any changes to the valve clearances.

    Cheers,

    Sam
