No the state rules are all slightly different you'd be thrilled to know Tasmania intestacy rules allow more than one 'spouse'! And there is still an obligation of 'proof' for any de facto relationship, which is what some blood relatives use to create issues against surviving gay partners - and the most important thing that would be removed with the change to the marriage laws.
And still no mention of partner rights in medical situations?
No one's attacking the churches - no one cares about them anymore; last census showed 52% of Aus identify as Christian.

It's a splitting hairs argument Karen. The courts make the reasonable decisions most of the time and are biased towards minorities in any case. I have direct experience of this from my charity work. e.g. we lost a case where the male lover of a deceased married man was awarded our share of the estate.

Last time I did maths, 52% is a majority.

Which is exactly why the whole argument should be federal not state administered.

No it's not and while you feel your charity lost out, maybe that man really did want his estate to go to his lover? Further, that's an indictment of the current de facto laws (did you read the Tasmanian intestacy rules?) which would NOT come into play if they guys had been married. There is only one one thing to consider here:
De facto needs to be PROVED
Marriage is accepted as fact - no legal argument necessary; that's all people want. Just plain acceptance as FACT.
And if the majority 52% votes no, then I and most people will accept the vote...

Actually this whole discussion has made me realize what people actually should be up in arms about is the ridiculous de facto rules in this country that allow people to claim all sorts of 'relationships' which entitle them to benefits ranging from government payments to estates... go back to married or not and we'd all be saved a lot. And yes, keep it to "2 human conscious people"

I find it incredulous that they can tell us what the weather is going to be in 80 years yet they can't tell us what the weather is going to be next weekend.

and that's because green activists have made it impossible to build new dams, yet our population is growing and agriculture increasing. We can't continue to import people without building more dams and power stations.

when I got my car back from the workshop recently, they'd given it a quick wipe down with "no wet" waterless cleaner - the shine was amazing, but apparently the stuff is now hard to get. The car was clean and polished when it went in; apparently you can't use it on a dirty car, it's just for sprucing up, but it sure worked.
