SMS's are carried over the signalling network of a telecoms carrier, they have to be sent one after the other, so you get a queue of waiting messages. There are multiple "store & forward" computers called SMSC's which receive each message then queue it up to send. Because of cost, telcos size their SMSC's to be just big enough for average peak load. When a spike in load occurs or when an SMSC crashes, the SMSC's lose any queued messages.

SMSC's crash regularly, lots of SMS's get lost. Just like call drop-outs, telco's don't care, they only have to be as good or slightly better than the worst quality competitor to stay in business.

What about bad weather disrupting satellite signals? I think your answer explains a lot of the delays between Klink and me as I've noticed it's the messages sent at peak hours that are most likely to be delayed. But the other common thread seems to be if there are big storms in either place?

 

Sms traffic between hk and aus would most likely today be carried as packets over IP, using undersea cable, but possibly microwave links for the final legs, which can be disrupted by severe weather.

btw a mobile phone network only uses radio for the "last mile" between your handset and the nearest base station, thereafter the voice, sms and data is carried the same way as a fixed line network, over optical cables for the most part.

 

OPTUS used microwave links that replicate dark fibre and some years back had an issue with time delay causing drops, this was replaced by another vendor and the algorithm for token delay was replaced by the new vendors technology

A friend of mine worked for one of the BIG 3 looking after the SMSC and it was only 1 server for all of oz. He used to troll us by sending out random SMS's with unique call ID's.
