Working on the front disc brakes of my 1980 308. As I am knocking out the race on the inside bearing - what pops a split retainer ring (Photo attached). I will add that the bearings and the seal are all intact.

At first I thought it may be a component related to the seal but there is no way for it to fit in or on the seal. Then as I further examined the inside of the hub itself there is no channel whatsoever for any sort of retainer ring, not to mention the fact that the races are pressed into the hub. I am wondering – could this be some sort of spacer? Something that keeps the seal from pressing deeper into the hub? So far, nothing I can find evidences the existence of any such clip/ring. Has anyone else something like seen this?

That is a spacer ring that goes between the bearing and the seal. It is part number 115967 and was used on the 308's starting at s/n 30245.

Great - thanks. Could not see that in any of the diagrams I found.
