Incredibly lucky. Still have to see what damage was done to any gears that the loose bolt struck when it finally came loose, but so far the diff cover and most internals look probably salvageable. The loose bolt was grinding up your diff cover, which explains the silver oil and shavings. Just have to inspect your gears now.

Yeah, I've got a gearbox here that did just that... BOOM.. diff crown bolts came loose then the set screws holding the halves and clutches pop'd and the diff shifted, cracked the upper diff cover and filled the gearbox with metal shavings. Terrible mess, going to cost north of 10k in parts to fix. Later Mondial/328 box with the internal pump too.

repair the one you have, it's machined to match the case. Yours doesn't look cracked so you may not have to weld it. The bearings, baulk rings, gears etc. will all need to be inspected and replaced as needed.

When I check'd last yr they were not available and the option was to turn down the longer diff bolts from another model. The bolts&nuts are single use.. that adds up real damn quick at £28 a piece!

Impressive how quickly you took that sucker apart and got to the bottom of it, though!

Glad to see you're not an a--clown but sorry to see the problem you have to solve. I'd almost want to be an a--clown rather than have that issue. You seem up to the challenge though so please keep us posted on your progress if you would. Hope this goes smoothly and at your pace.

Absolutely will keep you'll posted. There seems to be puncture in the housing in one place. It's very tiny. Gonna be pulling out the housing and gears now in the next hour or so.

    never seen that before

great pics, thanks for sharing & keep up the good work :)

maybe the question was never asked ... but did your car run when you bought it ? or did you buy it "unseen", "not running" or similar ?

Car was running fine apart from 4th gear was a little tight to engage and disengage. No noise on idle or running, no humming nothing at all.

I have a dry-sump gearbox/diff case, but it owes me about 3K GBP and it's in the UK.
