transmission oil is getting dirty -- WTF ??
Having just read the last 2 posts on my thread re. redline gear oil, I now see why the trans oil is brown and dirty, some engine oil is leaking past the shifter seals from the sump in to the transaxle.
no point in wasting $65 on a redline trans oil change if the engine oil is going to keep leaking into the trans. so here's the question: (I am too lazy to look at the manual) Can the shifter shaft seals be changed without pulling the engine ? If I jack up the car and remove the sump cover and the transaxle cover can I get to the seals ?? Just wondering. andy |

I did this on my 328 last year. You don't have to pull the engine. The gearbox pan comes off easily. The oil pan is a different story. You have to remove the dipstick extension tube before removing it and it's difficult to get to. Once that's out (and the oil temp sender) it's not too bad replacing those seals. Use Verrell's quad seals. Tighter fit and I think they'll last longer than the flimsy ones that are OEM. Rifledriver has said that you can do it without removing the oil pan, but I'm not skilled enough to have pulled that off.
I'm assuming your 308 is the same as my 328. 308ers will have to chime in to confirm. |

If you search here I'm sure you will find some threads with pictures. I believe I've started one myself. Don't forget to remove the dipstick extension tube and the oil temp. sender!!!! |

And while you are there recommend changing the silent blocks in the shift shaft.
