The other location that someone brought up is the parking lot in front of starbucks Monarch Bay. I did some work last summer pertaining to Irvine Co. and I can understand the liability concerns. BUT, lets also weigh the business benefits that it has brought to them. Obviously this point has been brought up and beaten to death before, but just wanted to ask if anyone knows for sure why Irvine Co. is so opposed to us being there? Also if you ask me, don't the police have more important/threatening issues to deal with than checking VIN's on the cars of OC's most succesful people?
I concur. CC is a great venue but if we're not welcome there are other places to go. And if not fashion island there are many other places in and around Irvine/Newport that will be more than willing to let everyone in. Ticketing for dealer plates is lame, I don't see how they can do that?
There already is a car meet there Saturday morning. Mostly hot roders and classic cars. I attend on occasion. Good show, a lot less people and more casual.
No, it is in Monarch Beach. It is by the Gelsons supermarket and Ichibiri. There is also a Star Bucks in there. If you would like an address, I would be happy to post it. Joe
24 Monarch Bay Plz Dana Point, CA This is the Address of the Gelsons. The shopping center is on the inland side of PCH. About 5 minutes south of Crystal Cove. Once you enter you'll see the cars. Joe
not the end if you want a $1000 ticket for some reg issue. this is what they are telling dealers or people with dealer plates. It sucks! I just think the piont is to have fun a hang not haggle with the rental cops begging NBPD to ticket like they have some authority. Fashion ISLAND WANTS US THERE. CC DOESN'T
The last I heard of this, as long as people were not advertising things would be ok. This was 2 weeks ago, I think. Has this changed in one weekend? These CC moving threads are becoming too common, and regardless I doubt the show can be moved unless the CC management pushes it out completely.
Yeah, having cops hand out tickets to cars with dealer plates and no front plates is really going to far. Then again we'll see this saturday if they'll actually go through with it. If they do, it will leave a very bad impression and the gatherings at CC will start to deteriorate.
Fashion Island makes sense from a space and no-residential-area, point of view, but I wonder if management or the cops will really allow anything that CC is trying to stop. Is FI going to allow dealers? Signs, banners, brochures? I guess I don't understand the need to move things. The security patrol at CC was responding to complaints from some of the regulars at CC who said they were being pushed out by a row of dealer cars that weren't in the spirit of the meet. They told people no signs allowed. Dealers returned, complaints continued, warning tickets were issued. People started harrassing the security team, laughing at their warnings or ignoring them altogther. Security tried (albeit way too heavy-handedly) to impress upon people the need to listen to them. Dealers returned, complaints continued, photos were taken, harrassment on both sides escalated. I talked to the head of security and posted some thoughts on the situation. Christmas Eve saw a great show with very few incidents. New Year's Eve saw a light turnout and virtually no incidents. One of the main differences was that nobody seemed to have signs, brochures, etc. I also heard fellow attendees advising each other about the lineup procedure, the parking, the signage, etc. to keep things running smoothly. Think of it this way: Security will continue to enforce the no-dealer rule whether there are more complaints or not. They decided that was the best policy and will stick with it. Like it or not, if they feel they are getting pushed around, they will push back in whatever way they can. So calling out the CHP or NBPD is a possibility. Stupid move on their part? No doubt. Within their rights? Certainly. "Moving the show" from CC will probably not happen any time soon. The regulars and a lot of enthusiasts like it for all of the reasons mentioned above and elsewhere; ocean-close, PCH accessible, Catalina views, clean, well-kept lot, Starbuck's and Pacific Whey, yadda yadda yadda. Starting another show at FI makes some sense I guess, for those who don't want to deal with the hassles, but it will probably take some time, or a boneheaded move by security to get that to happen in the near future. Not trying to discourage it, just pointing out that it would be best to start one there and see how it grows. The Monarch show is an example of that spirit. It's like old-school CC. Not as much a show as a meet, like CC always was.
Crystal Cove's charm is its small boutique size. Everyone knows there is a finite space for cars, and you better bring something special to display. Moving to Fashion Island would dramatically increase the space available and I'm sure we'd start to have the Miata clubs, 350Z clubs, etc. along with vendors with banners and products displayed. This, in my opinion, would kill it. Nothing wrong with Miatas and 350Zs, but they are not what CC is all about. The show needs to keep its "Monaco-esque" personality intact.
Personally, I don't believe this threat of ticketing. NBPD are hands off. If you're driving a vehicle illegally then of course you run a risk no matter where you are. They don't want to see dealers using CC as a place to sell cars or related stuff. If you're a private party then there are no problems.
Just so everyone knows, many of the folks who now gather in my neck of the woods in Monarch Beach were the originators of the CC auto show. And that original show started off primarily as hotrods, muscle cars and classic American iron. Also, as much as I'd like the venue to move even closer to me, the parking lot at Gelson's is comparatively very, very small and the feeling that I got is that many of the originators who moved from CC moved down to Monarch Beach for a reason. A mass showing of others might not be what they were hoping for. Just food for thought.
I think everyone needs to decide where the meet will be held now. So far from what I can gather from the boards, people will be meeting at CC (those who don't go on forums) and then the rest will be spread out between Monarch Bay and Fashion Island. What will really kill the meet is if people thin out to different areas. We need to pick a new location, and make sure everyone is dedicated to show up, or I believe the end of the meet is coming, people don't like to be jerked around, and I think alot of people will lose interest if noone can agree on a location, so far Matt Nunez is going to be at Fashion Island this saturday. Maybe we should all give Fashion Island a shot this weekend, talk about it, and then decide, maybe even send somebody to Crystal Cove with some directions or flyers or something to spread the word to other owners, I am willing to help with that if everyone can decide.
You're the only person I've heard of talking about moving it... as far as I know, CC is still good. Anyone heard differently?
I think Matt mentioned on another forum the parking lot by Café R&D. Located next to Neiman Marcus. Joe
