Some bold car thieves remain on the loose after stealing, crashing and dumping one of the most powerful Ford models ever.

The car in question is a limited production Ford GT packing 550 horsepower. The Manteca Ford Mercury dealership and authorities were alerted to the theft when a Manteca police officer on patrol noticed the bright red car on Locust Street. It appeared the thieves lost control of the car, went over a curb, destroying tires, rims, a fender, mirrors and more to the tune of about $30,000 in damage, according to dealer Phil Waterford.

He said the thieves wanted the car badly. The break-in happened about 4 a.m. Tuesday. "They kicked in the back door, came down the hallway, then used crowbars to open the other doors," said Waterford. From there they "broke open a safe and found the keys to the car."

But that wasn't all. Waterford said that in order to start the GT, the thieves found the battery charger and jumped it. They pushed a Mustang belonging to rapper 50 Cent out of the way and from the damage that was caused, probably fished-tailed the GT out the showroom's double doors.

At that point, "they took a Navigator and rammed through the fence," Waterford said.

The building didn't have an alarm system.

Waterford is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible.

The GT is nicknamed the "Ferrari Killer." According to Waterford, in the 1960s the Ford Motor Company tried to buy Ferrari but was unsuccessful. So instead it built the GT. Its specifications boast accelerating from a stop to 60 miles mph in three seconds. The GT's top speed is rated at over 200 mph. Only 500 of the models are manufactured each year.

Waterford said his dealership has sold five of the GTs this year. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $160,000.

Wow. Sounds like something that would be written into the plot of a Grand Theft Auto. Honestly it does.

Interesting (somewhat negligent) the dealer did not have an alarm system. One would think that they would at least have a monitored system!

They had to explain why they were writing the article. Most people do not know what a GT is, but everyone know what a Ferrrari is. Without mention that the GT is a "Ferrari Fighter" readers might have thought that the Escort GT was brought back?

Obviously not the brightest proprietors. No alarm on the building and they kept the keys to their $160K showpiece in a cabinet that could be opened with a crowbar. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess they have no video cameras anywhere on the property either. If I was their insurance company I'd drop them if they tried to file a claim on this one. Seems like the result of irresposability to me.

I don't understand. The job sounded somewhat professional right up until they got the car. Obviously they knew that the building did not have an alarm because I am sure it took several minutes to kick open the doors, use the crowbar, jump the car, steal a Navigator, and get away...

I don't know...it just seems a little dumb to get that far and after all of that effort, F the car up getting it out of the showroom and then damn near totalling it a block away...

I don't know if it's a Euro thing or not, but I remember a thread about a huge Ferrari dealer fire and someone stated that they were required to have the keys easily accessible to evacuate the cars in case of a fire so I can't fault them there(if its true).

As for it being a professional job eh. I mean once they broke the door down and didn't hear anything, who really thinks "Oh it could be a silent alarm". I do believe the person had been thru the dealership a few times before though. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make it a pro job...

I get the feeling it was an inside job and they were just joyriding... if it was a professional they would have stolen a car they could actually sell... also they wouldn't have wrecked it a block away and they wouldn't have left the car where it was they would have at least stripped some stuff .. I would imagine.

The car was found in the worst part of town. It seems to keep getting a lot of attention though. Drugs & Gang shootouts are very common in that area. It was so bad that the Police Dept. had to ask all the property owners to help them out by sending eviction notices to all the problem tenants that the Dept. had info on. They also ticketed them for several code violations. Apparently it worked. It hit the news last week saying that they just moved out to avoid any more crap.
