Alright so I'm new to the forum, and I wasnt really sure which section to post this in, so I used this one as its relevant to my question. Well I had a really good year financially, and I decided its time to get rid of my M3. I've been debating between a 97-99 F355 or an 01 911 Turbo. I would just like a non-biased opinion (although it might be hard on these boards) on which one you think I should buy. Theyre both about the same price, give or take a few bucks. Lemme know, thanks.

I have owned a F355 and I like the looks a little more than my current 360, so I am not bashing it. But as a daily driver I would be scared. The 30K service is a nightmare no matter what anyone says Go and use the search function above to the left hand side and you will see the misery.

On the other hand a P-car to me looks like a inverted bath tub. So save yourself the misery buy a reliable 360 with lower service costs! You can probably get a 99 w/ 20K on the clock for 110K (est.)

    Good luck.

    Brennan,

On average, Porsches are more reliable, based on my experience. You can drive an AWD Twin Turbo in sunshine or rain, day in and day out.

A 355 is more expensive to keep. A major belt service is $5K+. If you have an F1, then they can be even more expensive than a 6 speed.

The 01 996 Twin Turbo is very fast -- it will easily pull away in a straight line from a 355 -- but is almost nonchalant.

The 355 has great engine sound. It engages the driver. When I have the top down in my Spider you can feel the heat from the engine; kind of like a race car. In short, the 355 is raw. You can throw it around a curve like a go cart vs. the Porsche that doesn't seem to want you, or allow you, to do that.

By the way, if I were you, look at a 96/97 Twin Turbo (993) rather than an 01 or later Twin Turbo (996). The 993 Turbo is, in my opinion, a lot more fun to drive than the 996, more visually appealing, and seems to be appreciating in value as of late. I'm looking for a 993 Turbo right now.

    Good luck!

this is the best one's on the market ... I use to know the original owner ... this car could be had for a little over 80K and is one of the best cars that was ever made , and not even fully broken in yet ... It is also a lot more fun to drive than a 996TT .

Depends on your use plans.....Porsche can be a daily driver, can park it most anywhere, and will depreciate like a brick. Reliable but not as sexy.
Ferrari F355 is sexy as hell, fun to drive, but not to be parked most places and not really a daily driver. The maintenance costs will be offset by the lesser depreciation.
Around here, Porsches have limited "head-turning value", Ferrari's, even the most modest ones "turn heads" and certainly are more rare.

Thanks. I spoke with the dealer this afternoon about this car. I go back and forth between a Turbo S vs. a "normal" Turbo. I am also working a guy who has a 97 with Ruf upgrades. Car is amazing even though it's not stock.

    F355 and http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...=&curdiest=1114

I will take the 993TT any day over an old F355 and the 993TT will crush the F355 in performance ...

Also the 993TT is maintenance free , if you start looking at modified Turbos like the Ruff and cars with after-market kits you are asking for trouble .

Well I have just sold my 2001 996TT EVO 640GT today. In addition it had PSS9s and an awesome sounding Europipe Stage 2 Loud. I have had it since new and the upgrade fro a bout 6 months and it has been a terrific car. Tomorrow I am picking up a brand new F430 with 67 miles on it from the local Ferrari dealer. Why you might ask. My Turbo has 640 HP with about 590 torque. It is flawless inside and out. The reliability has been awesome. But tomorrow starts a new world for me. The main reason is the exclusivity of Ferrari. Although I do not run into too many Turbos and a day to day basis and there are certainly not too many 640GT out there. However the F430 has drawn to Ferrari since it was launch earlier this year. In addition, Porsche seems to be diluting itself by turning out too many cars. As a result, Porsche as great as they are is becoming a more attainable commodity. I will miss the shear brut force of 640 ponies behind me but the Ferrari will satisfy a want I have had and need to fill. I just hope I have the same enjoyment over the next 4.5 years as I have enjoy over the last 4+ years.

F430SilverArrow are you having to pay over MSRP .. and how much ? I have had Porsches for decades also and ready to make the move to Ferrari the 430 was the reason up until this model it was not even a thought but now with this model all has changed . All of the points you made are good and if the cars could be had at MSRP many Porsche owners would be making this move now that the 430 has been created .

You're a 17 year old student (thanks for filling out your profile) and "had a good year financially"? Sure you're not trying to start a P vs F war?

In case your question is really sincere, I would get the 355 first, drive it a couple of years, sell it for close to what you paid (less maintenance and a lot of $$$ for insurance at your age). Then go and buy a later year Turbo whch will have declined to the 355 price by then. Drive that for a year. By then you'll know whether to keep it or go back to a Ferrari.

Sorry, but at 17 years old I just gotta ask you: " Are You for REeeeaaaaaaal???" Watch out for the Troll police on here, they will catch you! Anyway, 355 wins hands down IMHO. Looks are better, car is more rare, there are way too many porsches out there even though the P is probably faster, but who cares it is still just a Porsche!

Will this new car be your only car? If that is the case, it is a bad idea for the 355. These cars can stay in the shop for minor repair for a week easily. And that assumes the shop will fit you in. You might have to wait another week or two for an opening.

You need a reliable car to drive daily. Also it seems funny for a 17 year old to buy a Ferrari. Can you pay for major repairs if/when they happen?

The 355 is a much better car from an enjoyment perspective ... but it is also my personal opinion (and maybe only mine) that the 355 is shows a lot more age. I would much prefer a 1999 360 for a few extra dollars.

But if this is going to be your main car, don't make it a Ferrari

Had a 98 355 F1 spider and was torn by a 98 993 Twin Turbo Ruf. The Ruf was awesome and, combined with the performance and build quality, is a better car than my 355. Same applies to a 993 TT (non-RUF). And I agree entirely with priior post pointing out the 993 TT is a killer versus the disappointing 996 that most Porsche enthusiasts want to forget about, and hope the 997 displaces quickly.

Nevertheless, when push came to shove, I bypassed the Ruf, sold the 355 and got a 2004 360 Modena F1. The stellar looks, sound with Tubi, performance, and greater reliability grabbed me, over over the 993 TT.

BTW, if you are really 17, keep dreaming and think "maintenance costs"!.

If you're truly 17, buy a Porsche. You won't be ready for the maintenance - scheduled or otherwise - relating to a 355.

I have to agree that the 993TT was the ultimate Porsche... for me. The 996 did a number of things better and it was a significant improvement over the 993 platform, but I'll always consider my 993TT my favorite Porsche. :)

A "good year financially" for a 17 year old means his trust fund in about to kick in.... :D
