looking at current n.a.d.a. price guides/exotic and i'm suprised to see such a price difference between a 94' 512TR (high retail $104,000) and a 95' F512M (high retail $150,900) i recall seeing a couple 1995 F512M's sitting unsold in the chicago ferrari dealers "lake forest sportscars" and "continential autosports" showrooms as late as early 1997.

the F512M wasn't a sales success when it debuted, and today still doesnt have the visual appeal of the 512TR, or even the origonal testarossa (in my opinion) so why the $50K premium? is it just because there were only 75 sold in the U.S. we all knew that in 1995 and no one ran out to buy one then.

    any owners thoughts?

    thanks

Ferrari only made 501 "M's" world wide and only 75 for the North America market. It carried a MSRP of $200K when new and I don't think any Ferrari dealer that had one had any problem selling them.
Part of the upcharge is the limited number to the U.S., but a lot of it is just the car. There is a lot of difference between a TR and a M, performance wise, handling wise and esp. looks. They had many engine upgrades, suspension changes and aerodynamic modifications. All of them came with ABS, they were approximately 150 lbs lighter than the TR, they came fully equipped from the factory, so that there were virtually no additional options, the cabin is more user friendly and the seats have better support.
Also remember that this was the last of the "Testarossa" series, since Ferrari was producing the front engine V-12 at the same time, so the initial reaction from some 1995 buyer's might have been wait and see what the new car looks like. It seems as though the M prices dropped to their low ebb about 2000 and have been heading up since then.
I find them to be an awesome vehicle; very torquey, very responsive and very fast. With the exposed round tail lights, the under the glass front headlights, the NACA ducts rather than the long horizontal vent and the distinct wheels-I believe Ferrari saved the best for last.

In fairness too, some of the really clean 94 512TR's have been closer to the $110 - 120K range .........................

I think the market on exotics will always be elevated just because the people that made all of the money in real estate have to put their profits somewhere and hopefully that will be appreciating assets rather than the opposite. Frankly, I have talked to a couple of pretty savvy investors and they said they are removing some profits and purchasing "investor grade" vehicles. One even went so far as to say that he was leaving the $250K range vehicle for the more lucrative $1mil market. That should do the market some good if that attitude prevails.

The M is just so cool. And a better investment.
The TR probably has close to equal performance, but if you've got the spare change get an M.

The "M" is simply put: a Testarossa's Testarossa. A quintessential "best for last" example.

The car I bought had an ask of 135k for a 1600 mile yellow/black mint condition car with the major done and new tires. Also a letter that stated from a dealer that no paint work and an unmolested car. It was a '94 with the abs brakes and color matched engine shield.

In 1995 the F-512M was Ferraris flag ship. However it was soon over shadowed by the Ferrari F-50.. Many Dealers were unable to locate an F-512M since they were so rare. Few selective Dealers whom did have an F-512M were asking above window sticker.. As I recall that being my case in 1995..After a long lengthy search for an F512-M .. My wait was over.. Being the third owner on my F512M; I paid Premium for it. I bought this car two years ago and paid $175,000 usd. Also for being the third owner, before purchasing Ferrari Of Beverly Hills.. Did the Final Inspection car checked out great, car fax came out clean.. When purchased odometer reading was 2,500 miles current reading is 3,800 miles. Values will rise as the market flatens in the Property sector.. Life is a cycle your always going to have up and downs. It took me five years finding my F-512M...

I wouldnt say the F40 overshadowed the 512M. They are very different cars.

The 512M is livable on a daily basis, its a reasonable, comfortable, sexy, exotic sports car

The F40 is an UNreasonable BadAzz sexy race car for the street :)
