Well, have you? C'mon windows users, update and patch up those computers! Take a few minutes so you don't get hit by the next big vulerability. Am I the only one that looks at this thread and notices how people don't update their Windows 2000 systems?

Do it, and do it again until there are no more updates to be done:

Don't have any virus software on your computer? Please, get something, here's one for free!

Not just your software for security holes, but also the new drivers may also add new functionality to your hardware.

Another thing, is if you have a very recent *gaming* computer (we're talking about powerful graphic cards here) it might be wise to get the latest drivers for that as well as new drivers come out (at least for nVidia cards) multiple times a month.

Also keep in mind, that your computer has more than one program on there.
Try out http://office.microsoft.com and update your Microsoft Office Products.

Use Outlook? Give Spambayes a shot. It uses Bayesian anti-spam technology so your filters get constructed around your spam. I use it, and it only misses about 3 or 4 e-mails per 500. I have even set my catch threshold quite high so I don't get good e-mail trapped. http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/windows.html

Got Adobe Acrobat and notice it takes forever to load up? Give Adobe Liposuction a shot by disabling certain plugins from loading. It cut my Adobe Acrobat start up time from about a minute, to a few seconds.

Spyware. Probably the biggest problem for homeusers right now. Everyone should have an arsenal of utilities to fight spyware. If you don't, now is the time to start getting them installed! Try out the following program for a good start.

    Remember guys, drive on! :)

Windows can get cluttered up with all sorts of garbage, from leftover temporary files scattered throughout the hard drive to entries in the Registry of programs you uninstalled long time ago and Windows is still looking for it. The Registry didn't get the memo. The result is a sluggish frustrating PC. Clean it out with Crap Cleaner.

It's funny to see how an update thread is aimed toward Windoze users. It's nice to know as a Apple user that a little dog or paperclip isn't going to interupt what your doing to ask if you need to update. It was just something that have me a good laugh. Sorry continue on sharing update secrets.

The Mac response: Yeah, but we Windows users actually use our computer for work and games :)
    Not just for a showpiece.

    The Linux response: rm -rf.

For the windoze user... HA HA HA your so funny...as a student I use mine all the time. I even edit music and movies. It is far from a showpiece. It goes everywhere with me (iBook).

I have nothing towards the Linux response...

    Oh I'm just kidding around.
I would love to have a Mac to play with and learn how to use. Linux is just too hard for me. Ran RC4 for a while on the laptop, just too frustrated with the lack of stuff I can easily learn and adjust to.

    I'm a windows baby.

Try selecting a different combo of updates.

It probably isn't getting stuck, but more like just taking it's time. Do you run it overnight?

It's the auto-update thing. It does it on its own in the taskbar. Yeah, it has run overnight, day after day, even. I don't really check on it, but everytime I see the little globe thing, it's at 6%.

I just tried via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and it says [Error number: 0x80072EFD] it can't go on ... whatever that means.

My guess = your hosts file has been modified. If you are around, drop me a line, and we can try a webex conference.

I love CrapCleaner. I was using one version about 2 years old, this new one picks up a lot more stuff.

    Once again I'm astounded.
You got that right, it was Norton that had the generc microsoft thing blocked completely...set it to permit all, and now it says it has successfully updated my computer.
    Thanks a lot!
I can't believe this ... aren't you tired of always having an answer to all of our little Windows problems? Within 2 minutes? You must be Bill Gates! :D
