Nice page, I think it should be required reading for all new and prospective 348 owner's (plus Chaa). Thanks for the info, I have that page bookmarked. BT
That site is maintained by (I think) our Fchatter "No Doubt". I'm not sure how much is original content, versus a compilation of many different sources. Although it's nice to have it in one place, I think some of the content is questionable in its accuracy.
What content do you think is questionable... We have to get Ernie's, Rifledriver's (where has he been?), Miltonian's, Fatbillybob's, and some of the other wrenchers opinions on that site....Dale is a tech too right?
If he we can verify that the info is accurate, I strongly suggest making this thread or a link to that page a sticky
That is the website of No Doubt. I found it also today. Sent him a pm and I noticed the link in his profile by coincidence. Good info !!!
Aaron, I think you hit the nail on the head with the phrase "wrenchers opinons". As long as we all recognize that Dale's (very good) page is a compilation of opinions and personal notes (not the Gospel according to Ferrari), it's all cool. On another note, Rifledriver has mostly quit Fchatting. Pity, in my opinion because he was one of the most respected professional techs on this site. -d
Why? He was a BIG asset to this website...If that is so, I know that I for one, will miss him for sure. Brian was an awesome tech and conveyed technical info extremely well online. He helped me out with quite a few problems I had.
No, I think that is were "No Doubt" got his info, or at least accumulated it. Cut and paste. At least give the author the credit when you plagiarize it. It looks like alot of stuff found here in our tech section. This one from the site sounds VERY similar to one I posted about a week ago: Here is the link to the thread I posted the how to http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=135140049#post135140049 and this one here: I found this place when I did my wheel bearings and also gave the info to a guy that was changing the bearings in his 355. Here's the link to the thread I posted it in http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66320&highlight=355+wheel+bearing At least give a brotha credit.
I agree...Credit should be given at the bottom of the page if that is the case. It is however a lot of useful info on one page and very well compiled. Ernie, What do you think of the accuracy of the info though...Have you found any inaccurate info on it?
Yup, This one here Uh I may be going nuts, but the last time I looked the 348 uses shift cables And this one It actually holds 11.9 quarts. Yes you check it hot but it only goes half way as to explain. You need to check it just after engine shut off per the book. Or you can check it with the engine running, as I have done several times and gotten the same reading. And this on That stuff is nothing but snake oil. Think I'm making it up, then read what the Federal Trade Commision has to say about it http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2001/02/zmax1.htm
"No Dout" has good intentions, but at least let people know were you got the info. Oh yeah and make sure the info is correct.
take it one more level. keep on adding tips and procedures, best places to buy parts . anything and everything deemed of value to a 348 owner.
I think that No Doubt is very well intentioned with his website, but I find many problems with his webpage. For one, he lists many things as FACT, when he is just rehashing what he has READ on some other website or page, without direct experience. For example:WWW.Durable1.com ports Ferrari 348 water pumps. This surprising trick lowers your water pump's parasitic drag on your engine, freeing up several additional horsepower for your wheels as well as improving your 348's gas mileage. http://www.durable1.com/waterpump_porting.htm Really? Does he have direct experience with this product he is recommending? Are the claims in fact true? Who knows.... Same with this: John DiGiacoma at East Coast Jaguar builds (re-builds) superior 348 water pumps...at a fraction (typically a mere $199) of the cost of OEM (often more than $800). These water pumps have twice the Ferrari warranty and they lower parasitic drag by using better bearings. He also uses better seals. Call him at (302) 475-7200 or 1-800-475-9257. An old example of his work is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4552343383 What about these aftermarket bumpers: Ferrari 348 aftermarket (stronger than OEM) front and rear bumpers from $1,600 are here: http://mysite.verizon.net/res1la3r/id37.html Stronger? Says who? And does he have direct experience that they will in fact fit correctly, with no additional fitting or finish work? Seems a stretch. And agree with Ernie...the whole gas additive stuff, Splitfire spark plugs and oil filter heat sink just sort of turn me off...like he's been reading the JC Whitney catalog a few too many times. Hope I am not being too offensive (my apologies No Doubt) as I really do feel he is a true Ferrari enthusiast, and truly loves brand as I do. Dave
as with anything here, you should take it with a grain of salt...... tip s should remain tips, facts need to be verified.... i.e.-" you should tork your head bolts down to 300 ftlbs for better compression.....". something like that can get someone in trouble fast! i like xyz wax, it looks the best... " thats ok .
No offense taken. If you want something added to that webpage, just make a suggestion and I'll be happy to incorporate it. Nor am I naive enough to think that everyone will agree with everything. That's OK, too. Always looking for 348 improvement tips, though. A good master/slave cylinder replacement would help that page, for instance. It's still a work in progress, which is why I wasn't really advertising it. My initial goal was just to brain-blast all 348 lore onto a page, and then to go back to mark up what I had and hadn't personally done. For example, I've been using the Oxytane product in my fuel. Famed NASCAR tuner Lee Hurley turned me on to that stuff. I'd never even heard of it before I had my Ferrari on his dyno, and sure enough it made a 6% difference in horsepower. But that sort of claim, even though verified, is so far out of the mainstream of thought that all I put on the webpage was just that the product was the U.S. version of Speed Tec...simply because there are far too many traditionalists who are going to get offended if you mention any real performance gains from "snake oil." Heck, there's probably some FTC complaint about the stuff for all that I know, and it probably eats up fuel fittings, accumulators, fuel pressure regulators and who knows what all...certainly the traditionalists are going to point such things out, anyway. Anyway, I'd like to see that 348 page grow in the number of tips...as well as become more refined and more verified over time. Too many 348 owners don't realize that they can buy a new $35 folding key from Ricambi America, for instance, instead of paying $70 for a used one on eBay. More still don't realize that they can buy rebuilt 348 water pumps, with better bearings and seals, for less than $200 through non-OEM sources. ...or that Stabilant 22a will fix many 348 electrical issues. So I'd like to see all tips out there, including comments on popular "tips" that have been factually debunked. Get it all out there in one location first, then refine that data with facts and personal experiences.
I think the page is a great idea and I do think it takes quite a bit of effort to compile a page like that. It sounds like it just needs to tweaked to a certain degree. I think our experts here on Fchat could help a lot with that and once we have a pretty good copy going, we should keep it as a sticky or keep it accessible by some kind of link. I think it would be great to have a compilation of the best tech threads written on here on one link. Save a lot of search and repetition of the same question being asked over and over.
Exactly. At some point I'd like to add a link to it that covers the conversations on here about belt changes, for instance. Lets face it, new 348 owners need a primer. They need to know to only check the oil hot (e.g. engine just turned off), not cold. What oil to use (e.g. AEHASS threads), how to shift into 2nd gear when cold, how to cure hot start problems, how to cure electrical problems, etc. We get a lot of the same questions asked because successive new owners all have the same issues...which means that a 348 Primer that covers those issues would benefit every new 348 owner. Call it an Enthusiasts' Guide or something, but we need to give back to this great community because so many in it have already helped us (so we owe 'em).
i think it is great you put forth the effort for this. but im not sure about the oxyten thing . i used that in high school , didnt help my acne.
The 348 Tips page has now been updated with a new clutch/slave write-up, aftermarket spark plug wire info, gearshift lever repair link, pre-purchase inspection template (rough form), oil change information, OEM oil filter failure and replacement upgrade information, etc.
No Doubt -- you might want to add this to the tips page: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25468 (Obviously, it's pre-Ricambi because I used EBC pads! )
