My 1994 348 Spyder's rear view mirror fell off.

I see a pad on the windshield (clear, 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches) and the back of the mirror is one piece.

What's the magic to put it back on?

It's magnetic and removeable. Just pop it back on.

My mirror isn't magnetic. There's a clear plastic portion on the windshield and the part that fell off looks tacky/sticky on the back.

    Maybe not original equipment?

Can someone send me a nice closeup (with macro setting ON their camera) of a 348 spider's rear view mirror from both sides of the glass?

    Thanks all!

    J

I've had that happen on a previous car. I took it to an automotive glass shop. They cleaned it up and reapplied the mirror quickly. I got the sense that it was a routine job for them.

Look at the bottom driver's side corner of your windshield glass. Do you see the Ferrari prancing horse engraved in it?

If not, then you may have aftermarket glass as well as aftermarket mirror...which would be a hint that your car may have been wrecked by a previous owner.

If you look at the 1994 348 parts book, #18 is the "mirror fixing bi-adhesive plate", which is supposed to stay on the windscreen. But apparently there are two different shapes and styles of these bases, so the mirror that fits on one 348 might not fit on another 348. If your mirror fell off, but nothing is broken, you can reattach the pieces. I believe I have read that Porsche can supply an adhesive patch that is an exact replacement. Should be in the archives somewhere.

I would strongly advise that you do NOT glue the mirror to the windshield on a Ferrari. There is a strong possiblility that if you DO glue it on, and something hits the mirror, it will rip a chunk right out of the glass, ruining your windshield.

The same thing happened with my 308. Get some special mirror adhesive, sold at most aftermarket auto parts stores, clean the area real well with a razor blade and cleaner and reattach. Mine atayed put for the remainder of my ownership.

That happened to me few months ago. I bought a repair kit from Pepboys but the tape were too small.

I recommend to just go to the dealer and buy the double sided tape for the 348, which I ended up doing. Approx $5.

Egads!! That is one helluva conclusion!!! If you have an aftermarket windshield is a hint your car may have been wrecked by a previous owner?

What if they took a rock and broke the windshield? :)

It's just a "hint." Aftermarket glass and aftermarket mirror means non-Ferrari work, which usually means non-insurance work.

Thats not necessarily true. I had my windshield broken when an installer was running a wire for my valentine 1. I finally tracked down the last OEM 308 windshied in Pennsylvania, but next time it will have to be aftermarket. Does that mean my car was in an accident?.

As far as I know, there is not an aftermarket source for 348 windshields, unless you have them made to order.

maybe the owner felt glass is glass, not the same as a belt service , etc...
didnt feel like spending 3000.00 for a windshield he could get for a fraction of..

i have had to replace many windshields in my cars, never wrecked them , well actually i did wreck one, but the windshield was ok. car totaled...

A little dramatic for a replaced windshied. Probably should depreciate it 20K for the windshield while we are at it. :)

I think there are drugs inside the doors, cause we all know that drug dealers would never use the FNA dealer to fix their cars and that windshield must got broke by some careless drug dealer/owner....afterall, you know that windshield wasn't broke by a rock, must have been when he was outrunning the DEA and smacked up the car...so I'd be careful with your car around airports and such, don't want dogs "hitting" on your car! ;)

There are perfectly legitimate reasons for using non-Ferrari glass, but non-Ferrari glass is also what one would expect from a non-insurance, non-OEM repair.

And there are only so many reasons to use non-Ferrari glass, such as not having insurance, or insurance having totaled the car (in which case, all the repairs will be performed by the rebuilder, none of which are covered by insurance any longer).

If he's got non-OEM glass and a non-OEM mirror, then I'd simply take that as a push to search the car for other non-OEM "fixes." Paint overspray, for instance. Frame welds, etc.

The car might even be clean.

Yes, the windshield has the ferrari horse in the lower driver's side corner.

The mirror has Italian wording, but no horse.

Does anyone have a picture of their 348 spider mirror thru the glass?

    Thanks for everyone's help!

    J

It's really easy to fix. The little plastic thing you see on the windsheild is the old adhesive. Here is what you do:

    1) get a crayon and trace around were the old adhesive is on the outside of the windsheild

    2) using a razor remove the old adhesive on the inside of the windshield

    3) clean off any old adhesive on the back of the mounting area on the mirror

    4) using the activator chemical provided in the rear view morror kit, prep the glass and the back of the mounting area

    5) apply the adhesive and attach the mirror to the windshield.

You will need to hold the mirror in place for at least 10 minutes. Most cars these days have a button that gets attatched to the windshield, and then the mirror slides in place on the button. The button is not "magnetic" there is a little allen screw on the bottom that keeps the mirror on the button. However on the 348 there is no button so you will just have to hold it there, until your arms are burning. Yeah baby feel the burn LOL :D.

Any way the picture is the stuff you wanna get. you can find it at just about any auto parts store. Last time I needed it I think I bought some at Wal-Mart for $1.99 or something like that.

    happy fixxing

Thanks a million for the expert advice. I have purchased the new mounting kit and will follow your advice later today. I'll advise on how it went.

Looking forward to feeling the burn!
