Actually, according to an interesting article in today's WSJ, Fiat only has about one year of cash left before somebody turns out the lights. Find the article if you want to know more, but Fiat Spa is playing a game of chicken with GM over a "put option" where GM has to buy Fiat Auto, which includes, sadly, Ferrari.

It doesn't look good. Fiat Auto has the capacity to produce 2.3 millions cars, but it only sells 400,000 a year. So look for a gang bang by the other major players. They would love for Fiat to disappear.

Even worse, apparently, the Italian government has grown weary of throwing, in their case, of already bad money against even worst money.

What does this mean for Ferrari? Not good is my guess. Imagine Ferrari being owned by GM! However, Ferrari does not have the resources to make it on its own. We may gripe about the technology in the new cars, but it is the price that you have to pay to be able to play.

To be frank, the Italians have a history over reeling from one crisis to the next. So this may be just another saga that will soon be forgotten. Then again, maybe not.

Once again Ferrari is not part of the GM/FIAT put. It's finances and ownership are separate. Ferrari is not going broke.

It's GM struggling to get out of the deal, citing FIAT's extensive reorganization since the put option was signed.....meanwhile the stock has tanked.........

    "You take it"

"No, I don't want it, YOU take it."

    LOL!

FIAT Auto does not represent the whole Agnelli empire however, maybe Napolis can see thru the murk of this deal and explain it to us bystanders.

Kinda like watching a train wreck in slow motion!

Does it really matter who owns Ferrari? Whoever owns Ferrari, pays the bills, but well be sensible enough to let Ferrari be Ferrari. Audi isn´t doing Lamborghini a whole lot of harm, is it?

Fiat Auto is not part of the GM put option.
The FIAT group controls the companies FIAT auto, Ferrari etc. FIAT auto is just one sick puppy in the litter.

Edit...Ooops a bit slow in typing...seems 4 others got a post in there before me :)

But I thought that Ferrari Spa is a sub of Fiat Auto. Or is Ferrari Spa a sub of Fiat Spa, which is the parent of Fiat Auto?

That's not what the WSJ article says, not that the WSJ is always right.

A bit of a hijack, but does anyone know if Ferrari is profitable on its own?

Thanks that does clear it up. So if Fiat Spa gets a $2 billion payoff from GM, it can use this money to fund Ferrari, right! :)

That would be nice, but I think there is a 2 billion dollar shaped hole that the banks would like to fill first :)

That would be close, IMO. I say this because some of the cars are so outlandishly priced that they only sell a few a year. So, I am sure some of the high end vehicles might loose money to exist. I am sure they make money on the lower priced Ferraris (not that they are really lower end) but I am not in thier books to know for sure if it covers the cost of their empire.

i dunno, audi has turned em into AWD bores.

GM has done wonders for mass producing the hummer after they bought it. as well, they are closing down saab. so if GM gets their hands on ferrari, they will either increase production and expand model variations or shut it down if it can't make dough.

gotta love a little porker that has a computer deciding how much power goes to the front and the back instead of good ole driver throttle imput as in rwd cars. as well, what a blast it is when the thing goes all the way to 70 mph in first gear. boring. it's darn near as numb as all audis are famous for.

Yep, read the article in WSJ too.

One big downside for me personally is that it looks like no more Alfa Romeo in the US. I can't see Fiat Auto entering the US market w/o GM's help.

The weird thing in the article was that, do any of you recall anyone calling the original hook up a "marraige made in heaven?"

I think most industry observers were pretty skeptical at the time.
