If you had to pick one, assuming mileage was similiar, both 6 speed, which would you choose and why?

    1999 Maranello

They are different cars used for different things IMO. F355 for tight mountian roads, and the 550 Maranello for the open highway. If I HAD to choose, I'd take the 550 Maranello for its V12 power and torque. Plus the car is much more useable if you ask me.

550 - Way more car. Must confess my bias. I'm not a spider guy.

Which of the two do you think are better for long term value?

My vote is for the 550 ..... however, I must qualify this by saying I never owned a 355 or 360, but have had similar cars such as a 996 and NSX. I currently own a 550 and bar none, the best car I've ever owned. I love my 550 ..... love the V-12, torgue, power and classy styling.

Several threads on the same topic, seems like the classic styling of both cars tends to attract the same people.

Still, both cars are very different.

You might get tired of the 355's lack of torque, but the noise (on a GTS or spider) is sublime, and the handling great too, in spite of an over-assisted steering.
The 550 is a torquey beast, more of a 2000-5000 rpm than a 4000-7500 screamer, much roomier, much more practical except for turning radius, a mighty animal when you stray into turning ASR off.
    Get both ;-)

John, I started with a 550 and though I love the car and the power, I chose to trade in for a 99 355 as the roads I drive, coastal mountains, are more fun in a smaller, lighter car. The sound is better on the 355, the interior better and more comfortable on the 550. Really very different cars and they don't really compare that well. You need to decide what your most important needs are and how the car will be used most of the time and decide from there. I love the 550 styling but I can tell you a large majority of people prefer the 355 styling. I was really suprised by this. In the end, you will enjoy either and be back for more anyway, so find a great car in the one that you think suites you the best and drive it often. No regrets!!
