Saw this post on PPBB and seemed very impressive. I know enzo's have run there on a number of occasions and wonder what times were posted. Does anyone have other times to put this in perspective? John

Successful record set up on the North Circuit
The Carrera GT is the fastest car to lap the Nürburgring North Circuit. With the clock showing 7’32.44 minutes, Horst von Saurma, Chief Editor of the German specialist magazine “sport auto,” achieved a new record for road-approved vehicles, at the wheel of the 612 HP strong Porsche. He completed the 22.6 km long round in the Eifel at an average speed of 164 km/h.

"It was really touch and go. The circuit was dirty in some sectors, which didn’t make it any easier,” beamed Horst von Saurma with glee, after his record round.

For ten years the magazine has been awarding an (unofficial) challenge cup to the driver who drives the fastest round on the Nürburgring using a road-approved car. Thus the race for the best time round the circuit has become a prestigious affair, as Nürburgring is still the best and most honest test of the quality of a vehicle chassis, motor performance, aerodynamics and naturally of tires. Since 1995, times have gradually improved from 7’52 minutes to the current 7’32.44 minutes. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Member of Porsche’s Management Board responsible for Research and Development: “The time achieved by Horst von Saurma is excellent and demonstrates the potential of our car. Until recently such times could exclusively be clocked up with pure racing prototypes.”

The journalist von Saurma clocked up the fastest round in the context of a so-called “super test,” which the magazine executes regularly. Top times on the Nürburgring, always driven by the same tester, are among the criteria. Wolfgang Dürheimer: “It is precisely for this reason that the 7’32.44 minutes are so easy for us to put in to context and are thus valuable.”

I'd love to know other times, as well, but it's difficult to keep people honest about it.

As planned, we didn’t talk about races, but now, an exeption has to be made :1983 Nurburgring 1000 km.

It was the last time people saw racing cars of this level of performance on the old nurburgring. 20 years later, it’s become hard to imagine such a madness. The same prototypes as used at Le Mans, 600 bhp/900 kg monsters, reaching 300 km/h down to Fuchsröhre, relying on a strong ground effect on a track where they took off several times… And without airbags ! !

Some photos of the ultimate race ? See www.nurburgring.de

Stephan Bellof set the absolute record of the Track, driving his Porsche 956 in 6 min 11s .However, the track had been modified due to the construction of the F1 circuit. So figures can not be strictly compared with others, but anyway, it was the fastest lap on the Nordschleife ever.

Don't believe everything the germans tell you!!! The CGT is not the holder of the fastest time around the Nürburgring (Nordschleife) for a road-approved vehicle, on road-legal tires!
The holder is the Radical SR3 Turbo. It's time 7min 19.7sec and it was only allowed one flying lap!!!
Many of you will not of heard of Radical, and i bet the Germans would like to keep it that way, no body like's getting destroyed by a 1.5 litre in there own back-yard!
Radical is a small british company, that make "extreme sports cars" for trackdays, racing and road use. Most, if not all, are powered by bike engine's, the SR3 turbo's is from a Suzuki Hayabusa. Fitted with a turbo it puts out 260bhp and 200lb ft of torque. There secret is there very light weight.
The SR4 turbo costs £40,000 ($73,000), which is a bargain compared to the CGT.

That's quite a legal road going automobile with street tires. Luggage space looks a little tight, as does room for the passenger. I wonder if they used the built in Nav system to find their way round the Ring.

And I thought that I went fast in a 911 group 5 in the 70th..We were proud to get below the 9 min.and now a street car makes it even faster in a street trim...

Although the radical is a very cool car and a great deal, I ahve to agree with Alex in that it is stretching it to consider it a road car.

I was hoping to see some times for other modern supercars. Anyone?

I was not aware the Radical was road-legal everywhere, I thought only some countries permitted them to be used on the road. Any clarification?

Not that it much matters since the Radical is a racecar, regardless of whether or not it meets the "letter of the law" for road car purposes. As far as real cars with carrying capacity and creature comforts are concerned...what is the fastest? I am relatively certain the Carrera GT is the fastest factory car, but I thought that the RUF 650R was faster period.

Also, hasn't Rohrl already set a lap time in the CGT which is several seconds faster than the one posted above? I recall seeing 7:28 somewhere around here or rennteam...

    Nurburgring wants 2019 F1 return

The Nurburgring has indicated it wants to return to the F1 calendar in 2019.

Although there was no German grand prix at all in 2015 or 2017, the country is returning to the schedule this year with an event at Hockenheim.

The recent calendar gaps were caused by the Nurburgring's financial problems, but now boss Mirco Markfort says talks are back on with Liberty chief Chase Carey.

"We want to get formula one back at the Ring," he told Kolner Express newspaper. "If possible already in 2019."

Markfort warned: "But this is only possible if meaningful economic conditions are taken into account.

"The business model a la Ecclestone is passe. It does not pay off for us in ticket revenue alone."

He said more talks with F1 chief executive Carey are urgent.

"We need clarity by the Hockenheim race in July," explained Markfort.
