Interesting story local Ferrari friend of mine recounted the other day. This guy currently drives a '07 599, which he loves but, unfortunately, has had a lot of trouble with requiring extensive time in the shop. Due to all this down time without his car, the sales manager at our dealership asks him: would you be interested in a GTO? Surprised my friend with this offer, as we were all under the general impression that GTO's are hard to come by and are not generally available for allocation.

This got me thinking, especially in light of all these threads featuring new GTO's appearing all over the place: how limited in production is this "GTO"? Seems to me that the GTO is essentially the 12 cylinder version of the Scuderia, closing out the generation 1 599 run just as the Scud closed out the 430 run. It also costs a very substantial premium over the base 599 just as the Scud cost a lot more than the 430 in it's day.

The questions are: does the above indicate that GTO owners will get hit with the same stiff depreciation curve we Scud owners faced? Also, will the replacement 599 offer similar or better performance than the GTO, essentially making it's performance trump card somewhat obsolete (a la 458 vs. Scud)?

Thoughts? Am I off base or right on?

Thoughts? Same old tired rumours--"somebody I know somewhere was offered a GTO by some sales manager at some dealer"....

Which dealer, which manager and how many has this dealer sold to date. Each dealer was to receive between 1-4, depending on size, reputation and favor with the factory. All dealers originally discussed their allocations with certain of their customers. These customers had to be vetted by the factory--a letter from dealer vouching for them, history with Ferrari, generally prior 12 cyl ownership, etc. The factory either ok'd them or not.

All were allocated long ago. This does not mean someone didn't "drop out" after receipt--for any number of reasons, like divorce, death, financial issues--or did/said something that caused the factory to change its mind about offering one to them.

They've committed from day one to 599. Several have been destroyed already so there are likely less. There are absolutely NO facts or other to suggest differently but these silly rumours.

My advice, if you're offered a chance to buy one--and you can afford it, do it. Period.

Agree 1000%. I'll refrain from commenting if the story from your friend is true or not but ... I have serious doubts.

Last but not least ... Who told you the GTO is a 12 cylinder Scuderia? Same friend? I suggest he drives one first before making such a comment.

+ 1. The scud does not wear the GTO badge. The GTO, although similar looking to a 599, wears the GTO badge. I seriously doubt Ferrari would stick those 3 very important letters on a car that did not deserve it.

As far as the allocation goes, jump on it.

There's no need to seriously doubt the truth of his story. What would he have to gain by lying?

I know my local dealer has a GTO sitting. I'm not sure how it came to be available (client backed out, never allocated, etc), but what I do know is that anyone I know that could remotely afford the car has been called on it. Twice. At least.

PM me, immediately. Where is it?

Seriously ... how many times have I offered, on this board, to take a GTO ??? And guess what ... they are NEVER available, as suggested/avertised.

If what you say is true, send me a PM right away. I am VERY interested.

    I'll be happy to :)

As i wrote, i have followed-up on several message board stories of 599 GTO's that are "available" ... only to find out otherwise :( My conclusion, no matter what you might hear to the contrary, is that demand FAR exceeds supply for this latest GTO from Ferrari.

(Yes, I already have a 599 GTO ... thanks to G. Risi and his world-class dealership in Houston/Austin :) But I'm always looking for another one ... cuz i think the new GTO is THE perfect mix of performance, heritage and investment for our generation.)

    update :

I have not yet received a PM, but i did call Ferrari/Maserati of Alberta (not sure if this is the same dealer referred to in an earlier post, but i noted that the poster was from Calgary), and asked to speak to the sales manager. I inquired about the possibility of a 599 GTO that might be available, might not be spoken for, etc.

The answer? You guessed it : "absolutely ridiculous ... they were all pre-sold, long ago. No such vehicle is available".

Another internet rumor bites the dust :(

Bottom line : no matter what you read on internet message boards, exactly NONE of these cars are homeless, "looking" for buyers. The car is VERY special indeed :) End of story.

EDIT : the only qualifier i'll make is that none are available in the western hemisphere. I've heard rumors of cars available in Europe ... can't really comment, other than to offer that if a VIN is only made available after money is put down, well ... that's not really a "deal" i'm interested in :(

You guys are so silly. these are all just mass produced pieces of steel. they are always for sale. and besides, who cares? there will be a better one next year.....
I for one, support the notion that the 599 GTO is just a scud version of the 430. It takes all the hype in the world to sell a $400k car nowadays.....It is a variant. Plain and simple. No liquidity and down 25% in the next 12 months.

Only an automotive ignorant would believe half the Ferrari factory BS anyway. They are great cars, but always fall very short of the promise IF you know the difference. and in case you were wondering, I have owned 12 of them in the last decade.

my point is this : it's much more than "today". For months, we've being hearing the "yawn" story: "there's nothing that special about the 599 GTO, just a rebadged end-of-cycle 599 GTB", we've heard, and as proof: "i heard about this guy whose cousin told him that the local dealer has one or two they can't get rid of .... yada yada." I've personally investigated several of these stories over the course of months, and they have all been FALSE :(

This ain't just another supercar. This ain't even just another Ferrari. It's a GTO ... that means something special, and the market (not over days, or weeks ... but months, in my personal experience) reflects it :)

Tend to agree, except for the silly part. There are some really smart people floating around here. I'd skip the silly label and just go with reading the 599 GTO futures differently.

Seeing as you think the GTO is merely a Scud version, care to back this up with some facts to support this viewpoint?

The really interesting part about the above is the poster refers to people as ignorant, well the above post seems pretty ignorant to me in the light of the fact the GTO is far removed from merely being a run out Scud type version, there is real new technology but at the end of the day anyone who has experienced a GTO will know its no Scud version.

Perhaps the above poster needed to sit down with a engineer involved in the GTO project, note an engineer, not a memeber of the marketing department, perhaps then it would be clear how seriously Ferrari has taken the use of the GTO label.

However different viewpoints more than welcome but ignorant thats pushing things a bit.
