No more circumventing profanity filter. Reason: Just say it - we'll "get" it, and it'll be more effective. However, be careful with the content and context of how **** is stated. Reason: Some might not "get" it.
I would recommend taking out about 90% of the keywords out of the profanity filter. For example, we couldn't even post "Fukushima nuclear plant" on this forum up until a few days ago. Since this site is predominantly visited by adults, it really doesn't make sense to filter words like hell and damn. (surprised those words now work!). Maybe this thread is saying the profanity filter has been adjusted. Yay! You know, the Puritans and Taliban aren't gonna like this much. .
I removed fuk, but haven't touched anything else in 5+ years, so hell and damn never were on the list. stop causing trouble and making up ****.
While not interested in "credit" or whatever, I requested the change regarding "fuk". "Fuk" was put in long ago to combat circumvention, as that letter combination was frequently used, particularly after the board switched from the cgi-bin to vBulletin. As "fuk" has been mentioned within relevant posts, removal of "fuk" from profanity filter should minimize interference with genuine posts. At the same time, us chatters need to "police ourselves" and not "take advantage". This thread was created to help prevent Members from erroneously assuming the standard of what qualifies as actual "un/acceptable" language in content/context, let alone circumvention, has lessened.
Sorry. I was hoping for a "Berlin Wall" kind of turning point in history. So, we're still not allowed to talk openly about Honey Badgers.
Wha??? And here when I saw those asterisks before, I thought it was because it was called the Sh!tushima nuclear plant.
Sticky for a week - gives everyone a chance to: Learn it. Know it. Live it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RUe02kPWvg[/ame]
What is the downside we are trying to protect ourselves from when we filter out words that are profane language, cursing, swearing, expletives, bad words, dirty words, cussing, blasphemy, irreverent, obscene, foul, indecent, strong, pejorative, choice, bad language, adult language, and/or mature language?
It's primarily for those looking over or under our shoulders. For example: John doesn't mind offensive language, but his darling girlfriend does. Joe doesn't like offensive language, but really hates it when his darling child asks what "****" means. [<That was f-c-u-k] More and more IT departments have Websense. If they *do* allow one to visit an outside site, it cannot have offensive material including combinations of letters. Whether offspring of yours, or friend or foe, every child you know now wants a honey badger.
WTF? I bring all my dates to FChat -- never had one get offended. Also use the 348/355 section as a sort of babysitting service.
My wife does that to keep me out of trouble! That said, I don't think she's quite thought far enough ahead. In a decade or so, I'll be looking to buy one. Then I can get into all sorts of trouble... gearbox rebuilds, suspension bushes replacements, engine out services, sticky interior fixes, side-strake cleaning, red-lining... *stares off into middle distance* *contented sigh* All the best, Andrew.
