I have searched and read the threads on replacing the fuel gauge sending unit on the 360 Coupe, so the gauge reads full when you have a full tank. I have been unable to find any info on this same process on a Spider. I assume the tank end that I need access to is under the Convertible top tray and the tray has to come out. I further assume that the only way to access the tray is to put the top up half way and somehow prevent it from falling down on top of you as you do your work? Is there any info and pictures on this out there? Thanks for your help, Ray

Maybe that would work but Rifledriver says you have to pull the top to get at the sending unit on a Spider. Not worth doing until you have to pull to top for some other issue.

    Akram,

I believe you can access the fuel sending unit without removing the entire convertible top assemble. Only with the roll over shut off valve you will need to remove the top assembly.

If you open the top half way and use a prop to hold the cover open you can gain access to two access opening that will allow you to remove the fuel pump and level sending unit assembly.

Thank you very much for your reply. I can get the top up half way and get it proped, but I do not have the access panel you show in the picture? I assume this is the left drivers side? Thanks again, Ray

The access panel is on both side of the car which allows you to access the top of both gas tank area. Also there are plugs to access the engine bay frame, this must be why some people charge more to change the clutch in a spider, for cars without these access ports. I think maybe these plugs were one of them Ferrari ooops items they added later? Just like the A/C heat shield they decided it was a good idea to add later which were not in the early 99 model 360s?

My 02 spider is a late 2001 build.

The access panels were added late 01 from what I understand. Early 01 spiders don't have them. I have a Feb 01 spider and don't have them.

Hi Ray. I just experienced this problem on my 360 spider. I had 2 bars and the gas light was blinking. After I filled up the car, the 2 bars were gone and the gas light stayed on. I have a full tank of gas and the gauge shows I am on empty.
What could have happened to the unit?

You provided at best, confusing information but it sounds like you replaced the sending unit and then got no reading? If you want help, you need to be specific.

No. I will try to be more specific.
I did not replace the sending unit.
I filled up the gas tank and the gage show empty right after I put gas. I was wondering if could be a fuse or the flote on the sending unit Is broken. There is a way to test the unit without remove it from the tank?

You can check the resistance of the sender if your car has the access covers for the fuel pumps in the convertible top tub. If it is an early 2001 model year or older, it will not have the access covers and the entire convertible top assembly will need to be removed. A good time to do it is when the clutch needs to be replaced.
It would also be wise to replace the fuel pumps and roll over valves if they already have not been done.
