You chat up someone you fancy.

When you fancy someone it means you are attracted to them in a more looks based manner but also if you want a relationship with them.

Shag is quite rude, but not as rude as f*** e.g. I wouldn't say shag in front of my mum

 

Noony's right. "Fancying" someone implies you find them attractive and want to start a relationship, it is perfectly alright and appropriate to use the expression in mixed company!
"Shag" isn't tho . It's slang for F word . You would normally only "chat up" members of opposite sex

 

i don't know much about British slang, but i DO know that "fanny" does NOT mean what it means here...!

My pool patio was commandeered some time ago by the Rainbow Club....and I'm afraid my girls saw some things they are STILL talking about at slumber parties......

The whole thing was trimmed in a lovely pink theme, and darling you should have SEEN the two matching black cowboys!

They were MAHHHHHVELOUS!

The girls were probably most upset when they let all the big signal balloons go at the end, as they realized they were a menace to nearby air traffic and could in fact strangle a sea turtle, if accidently ingested.

Watch out for those Shaguars!!!

Confusingly, 'shag' is also a type of shredded tobacco and 'Fanny' used to be a popular girls name (Fanny Cradduck was a well known tv chef). So, as always, its context that matters!

Is there a bird thats called a shag, or am i getting it mixed up with id'e shag that bird?

 

Being soccer fans, my family has hosted Brithish soccer coaches on tours that go around the USA teaching kids soccer every year for a long time.

My wife especially enjoys their visits, being the strongest anglophile in the house.

Being a Charleston girl, she spent many an evening dancing at beach clubs doing the southern dance known as "The Shag".

I can still remember one fellow's face when she boldly asked him if he would like for her teach him to shag, and upon seeing the recoil in his facial expression, followed up with a description of how fun it would be!

 

I can just picture that expression
