If you live near I355 / I55 and want to caravan down, please RSVP to me as I will set up a meeting time and place....

Every year Chicago celebrates the first ever automobile race in the US by a gathering at the rock on Thanksgiving: Early in the morning we get together near the Science & Industry museum to commemorate this event in which the winning racers spent something like 7 hours to get to Evanston from Chicago. Which is only a couple hours more than it takes today using the Kennedy...

Here's pics from last year: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=138229388&postcount=79

Anyhow, our friends from Motorsports Unlimited TV in Chicago will be there, so join us for a very cold morning.

“The Rock” (piece of granite) is visible from Cornell (about 20 feet in from the curb). America’s first auto race was held on Thanksgiving Day 1895. 100 years later (Thanksgiving Day 1995), the piece of granite, we call “The Rock, identifying the location of the start and finish of the race was dedicated. Motorsports Unlimited made a commitment on that day that each year, on Thanksgiving morning from 9:00 am til noon, we would be there with our camera and tape anyone who showed up to acknowledge the day.... and what they did, more than 100 years ago.

The “Rock” is located behind the Museum of Science & Industry. Get on Lake Shore Drive, go to the Museum and turn off Lake Shore Drive at 57th Drive (just like you would do to visit the Museum). Do not go into the Museum entrance, continue on 57th Drive as it bends around behind the Museum. 57th Drive becomes Cornell, continue on Cornell (you’re going South) for perhaps 1/4 mile. Watch on the right (that’s Jackson Park). The “Rock” is located on the side of the road.

If the weather is nice I might join you Carla. My 308 is behaving badly (just like last year, come to think of it), but it might be able to make it to the Science museum and back.

I could bring the calendars for Joe and Jeremy. Did I mention the calendar even features one of your LCO events?

    Off to Ed's again?

Right now he has a 365 GTB Daytona in the shop, as well as a Maserati Quattroporte.

    A $12k clutch job on the Maser....OUCH!

We are planning on cruising down Lake Shore Drive to have breakfast at Walker Brothers in Winnetka. ( 22 miles North)

It took a ride down Sheridan the other night, North towards the city. Looks like construction and bad roads a little north of Lake St unfortunately.

It was cold....and rainy. Mine was the only Ferrari there. And then I almost wiped out on the S curve on Lake Shore Drive.

I had to pass on this one. It was raining, close to freezing and very slick outside. I don't have winter tires on my car and don't trust my P-Zeros in this kind of weather. Maybe next year.

Were you at The Rock last year? Do you have that black 456 that allegedly belonged to a Bulls player?

The "S" curve has been gone for many years; it was around Randolf and LSD! You must be talking about the intersection where LSD meets Sheridan Rd?

There are still two S curves left: At Randolph and LSD, big sweeping S and then the shorter one at North Avenue Beach. Both great places to check out acceleration and grip levels. :)

Yes I was at the Rock last year...yes with the black 456. And yes LSD wraps around the Lake in an "S" near Oak Street. It was wise to avoid going out in that weather. Apparently my tires aren't that good either in the rain and I ended up going sideways through the turn a bit. I've drifted in snow but never in the rain before! It was pretty scary momentarily but then things came back into line.

If there was some sort of "Die Hard Award", you are surely a leading candidate! I know from experience that my Ferrari doesn't melt in the rain (although the damn top sure leaks!), but yesterday was a little over the top to go out. Steady drizzle, puddles, windy, and in the low 40's. Any guy that takes his Ferrari out in that to show reverence to "The Rock" on it's anniversary shows some true "huevos"! Dovete essere ammirato!

I was thinking of the crazy 'U' curve that was just west of the Outer Drive East apartments. This was before Harbor Point etc. existed. LSD made a crazy -U- shaped turn just before ODE to the west of it, and then reconnected to the current LSD south of Randolph. That was called the 'S' curve......why, I don't know!

This was probably 40 years ago before LSD was straightened out in that section.
