Has anyone actually installed a Quad shift shaft seal on the 328? I searched the archive and all the installations were on 308s. I could not get the shift shaft back in because the ID of seal is just too small, my original ('89)squared seal ID is at about 1mm larger. I lubed the shaft/seal pretty well but no go.

I did try fitting seal onto the shaft outside before installation and notice that it's a little bit tighter then the original seal, but once installed the seal inside the engine I could see that the ID of the Quad seal is noticable smaller.

Maybe I missed something. I know there're two versions of the seal and I did ask for ones that fit a 328.

    Thanks.

You have the correct seal. The 328 uses the same seals as the 308 QVs, and the 328 shafts & seal hole dimensions are the same.

Sorry, didn't see your question when you posted it.

I posted a version of the following tip to the quad seal thread awhile back but I guess you didn't see it either:

The shaft feels very tight going in with the seal in the trans case because the outer lobe of the quad seal is trying to turn inside under the pressure of the shaft end at the same time that the seal's outer lobes have to be compressed to seal against the trans. housing. Once the lobe has expanded outward around the shaft, the fit is correct. The seal will not cause excessive drag on the shift shaft once the shaft is in place.

The 1st time I tried installing the quad seals in a QV tranny we fought with the shift shaft for half an hour & almost gave up. Then one of the guys hanging around came up with this trick:

Insert the seal into the trans. case, then insert a socket or other smooth cylindrical object approximately the same OD as the shift shaft into the seal to pre-expand it. It helps if the cylinder has a taper on one end to help it get started. Hold the cylinder in place inside the seal and use the shift shaft to press it out as the shaft slips into the pre-expanded seal.

A big part of the problem is that the taper on the shift shaft's end is just a little too large. The pre-expanding object gets the two inner lobes turned outward just enough so that the taper fits inside the lobes & the shaft can slide thru.

An alternative to expanding the shaft would be to increase the taper on the shift shaft's end, but I figure most people don't have a lathe handy.
