Today gun season opened today. Got out about 7am and bagged my first Buck at about 10:30am. (Friend's private farm).

I think I got lucky. Lots of deer seemed to be spooked from the wind and the gun fire I heard. I thought I would never get one with all the ruckus going on. I saw a few does come flying by me so I was not able to take a shot. I fell asleep sitting in my camo tent, got a little bored and surf the net on my apple Ipod. (Asian's can't stay off the net..even when hunting. I was looking up hunting tips on the net). I was getting ready to leave when my friend's next door neighbor who owns a farm started up his airplane and I think it cause the deer to head my way. About 4 does came flying out of the briar bushes and didn't get a chance to take one. A smaller deer came out and I was going to take that deer, but decided it was too young. I let it go. I was getting ready to leave my camo tent when I thought I saw antlers. I looked through my scope and sure enough it was a buck who let all the doe(s) run out before him and see what danger lied ahead. (Typical male?) I decide to take the Buck from 75 yards with my 12 gauge. I thought I missed so I got out and looked around. I saw the deer laying down. I was pretty calm for shooting my first deer ever. I think I was excited, but then felt sorry. I field dressed it (thanks to youtube and all the videos that showed how!). Took pictures and off to the butcher to get prepared to go in the freezer. This buck I have in the picture is a 7 point buck and think it weight about 180-200lbs field dressed. Thanks Aaron for letting me use the farm!

Joey Adam was telling me how much you like hunting too. You are welcome to come out sometime and hunt as well after Adam's report there seems to be plenty of deer here for you. :)

  3. Thanks for the offer. I have 4-6 deer in my yard almost every night. I am sure Adam was seriously challenged.

Never seen them in my yard but I have seen about 10 to 12 munching in my alfalfa fields. Now Rabbits I can not pull in the driveway at night without seeing them running around. Got a few pesky coyotes here too.

Great kill Adam! I killed a small 3 point (small rack but big body) at about 6:50 AM on opening day! I haven't killed a buck in probably at least 6 years or so, so I was super excited! Nothing gets adrenaline rushing like killing a nice buck!

EDIT: I used a lot of exclamation marks!

  10. I read a blog on Adam's myspace about this. It went something like this "It was a cold morning, I was sitting in the brush sipping a Starbuck's Grande with the extra shot, eating Cheeto's. The deer piss I got from Walmart made me smell like a road side gas station urinal, and it burned my eyes. Suddenly I heard a rustle in the brush nearby. Where was Aaron - I didn't want pull ****** Chenney? I set the my coffee & Cheeto's down, and slowly picked up my weapon of brush destruction. Luckily I had set the sites earlier as I was driving to the farm using road signs as practice. I aimed for the pile of brush, and pulled the trigger. Boom, boom. I didn't hear anyone scream, so I reloaded. Boom, boom, again and again. I saw a clip on When Animals Attack, and knew this animal could hold it's own, so I continued to fire. Eventually I got up, and went to McDonalds. Imagine my suprise when I came back & checked for critters in the brush. I got a deer, and a possum, a skunk, and two of the neighbor's dogs. Aaron wisely advised me that most people don't eat most of my catch, so I only took the deer." :)

Didn't have time to fetch mine this time. I'd much rather bag the deer with such devices, and not the Heep.

He was wanting to make a cap from the Skunk Hide. It some some time but I finally convinced him the cap Daniel Boone had was made from a Racoon and Not a Skunk. He then pulled out his IPhone got on the net and looked up Coon Hunting Tips.

No seriously Adam Harvested a nice buck. I wasn't outside hunting with him (I haven't done much hunting in the last 20 years) I used to believe if I had to wake up before dawn to hunt it then it wasn't worth hunting. After seeing His Buck I think I am getting the hunting bug again.

I don't think Ada... knows about Hemingway. He probably grew up reading Playboy and Penthouse letters. You could probably write some poetry and Ada... would still relate it to the "letters" he loves to read :)

I also got a deer this year with my truck. After getting home a neighbor wanted to see the deer I hit (large buck) when we got there the head was already cut off. About 30 minutes between times.

    Great Hunting!

Firearm Season, opens tomorrow, Nov. 15th, in Michigan.

I can see 4 deer, from my window, from a much larger herd, here 1/4 mile from downtown Alma, and the Campus of Alma College, here at Masonic, as I type this. There are Body Shops, every 20 miles, along M-46, here in Central Michigan. There is that much work in repairing collisions, from Deer encounters!

I don't see Deer, strapped on fenders or roofs anymore, with the abundance of pick-up trucks, these days. I have yet seen one tied down to a Ferrari or Lamborghini, etc., or BMW, Porsche or Mercedes-Benz. Anyone have a picture of one??? :D

    Happy Hunting, Ciao...Paolo

Ours opens tomorrow here in Indiana also. It is pouring down rain now and expected to be real cold by morning. Fun.

BTW, in the late 80's my hunting car was a BMW 2002, so it has been done! :)

Congrats Adam on your productive start to your hunting career!

Here is my '08 buck taken Saturday morning. It was POURING down rain so I took a Marlin lever action .44 mag instead of black powder.

Did you use a tree stand, blind? Details?

I use several different techniques. The wind was favorable for one of my favorite tree stand positions Saturday, so I set up before dawn and the rain masked all my travel and climbing sounds. A doe appeared and was browsing around me around 7:30 am. She kept looking over her back to a thick stand that provides some shelter, so I figured more deer were about to get up. This buck came out and shook water off like a big dog and he looked pretty awesome. I watched them for 10 minutes or so. No other deer showed, but these 2 started acting nervous so I think they senced me. After I shot, the doe just froze. Took her another minute to trot off. While I was filed dressing, a 6 pointer snorted and stomped his feet at me, and started stalking me until he was 30 yards or so away. Since I was kneeling down, he probably was trying to decide what I was. Finally he shorted and ran off.

Last years buck was shot at 5 yards or so, I was still hunting on the ground and was standing in a trail when he and another buck, along with some does came running at me. Full speed, like galloping race horses, not bounding. The formation split me, the does going on one side and the bucks on the other. This was the bigger of the two and he was on the far side but leading by 1/2 length so I had a clear shot. There were leaves and dirt flying in the air from their hooves when they veered off to not run over me. I could have touched a doe. That was a pretty fun day, I'll never forget that hunt.

The snow shot was after rattling from a tree stand. About 15 minutes after rattling this buck came sneaking down a creek bed.

I never use the scents or lures, just am very cautious about smells and sounds. I wash all my hunting clothes in baking soda and shower with it. Then use a scent killer (no "flavor")spray on everything. I try to walk in water on my way to a stand to again help with scent and sound.
