gonna sound stupid but... On a PPI I was told the 550 needed new motor mounts, but how can I tell? Is there any laymens indicator? Also how involved is the job, and is it safe to go to an independent, or need to be a dealer. It also needs a 30k major, are there savings over doing each separately? I just bought back a 550 that I had sold in late 2004, and it needs some work. Had it 4 years , didn't have it 4 years. Great to have it back. Here is pic of real bald out of alignment tire after 1800 mile ride home. Limped last 150 miles at 50MPH. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Do a search on the threads. There's a pattern of wear on the under-hood insulation that indicates a mount problem. Very conspicuous--I should know.
DJW, Here's the thread you're looking for: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180998 What John mentioned in his post is a likely indicator of worn mounts. The updated mounts ("New Solution") will prevent engine sag which can cause the oil pressure sender to reposition close to the anti-sway bar resulting in damage to the sending unit. Barry
Anytime, DJW. Congratulations on the return of your old friend! Drive it in good health. Yes, have the major service, motor mounts, new tires and 4 wheel alignment done now and all at the same time.
The rubber in the mounts break away causing the excessive movement of the engine under torque. as for the alignment, check the rack for excessive play. Have found a few with inner tie-rods worn out. Regards, Jim
imprint, can even see the prancing horse. Are the 575 mounts worth 2.5 the price of the 550 ones? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Replace those mounts mate! Replace those tyres and get a wheel alignment also. While they are there, check for any excess wear/play in the front end that would cause premature tyre wear.
That is exactly the imprint I have on my insulation. The mounts were done at 30K service (I bought the car with 31K)....should I be concerned about any long-term consequences even now that the mount issue has been addressed? Many thanks.
Italiafan, i have the same impression on my under bonnet insulation. I had the mounts checked last week and they are revised 575 items. I assume that the impression was made before the mounts were changed, so even if you have the marks, it doesn't mean that you have old mounts now, just at some point in the past (if that makes sense). Not sure you can check them yourself (at least I wouldn't know where to start) so just get them checked by the dealer next time it goes in.
