I am in a small town, about 400 mi from my dealer in Orange County. I checked my oil this morning, while the engine was still hot, and realized that the oil level was a bit below minimum. My dealer used Shell Hellis 5W40 for my oil change last year. A few months ago, I add one quart of Q Power 5w40 (bought from the same dealer as they no longer carried Shell). I could not find any Q in this town, only either Mobile 1 5w40 (for Turbo Diesel Truck) or Shell Rotella 5W40. Should I go ahead an add a quart of either one? Thanks in advance.

**I probably posted this thread on a wrong place, should have been in the technical sectioninstead. My apologies.**

My specialist uses Shell Ultra Racing 10W60.

Since 5W is lower viscosity, I don't think it'll hurt adding a quart if you don't stress the engine too much but I recommend getting in touch with your dealer and DHL a couple of quarts of the proper grade to you.

You didn't mention whether your vehicle was due for an oil change soon, etc. If you want to be really safe (and are not pressed for time) go online and order a case of the oil you want long-term and just change all the oil. Keep a few quarts handy so this problem doesn't happen again.

It's a small insurance policy which you can do yourself. If you are really in a bind and just want to top off what you have, most will agree that as long as the weight of the oil is the same as what's in the vehicle you should be ok.

10-60 is suggested by the factory for extreme use. For all other purposes 5-40 is called for so the 5-40 he has available is the proper grade.

i would like to raise a question: i was told by my ferrari-garage, that the oil-level should be checked, while the engine is hot and running (at least running for 1 minute), and that the garage checks the oil, by reving the engine up to 4500 rpm for 1 minute and then at idle for 1 minute; they told me, if you measure the oil level with engine shut, the oil level will allways seem to be to low, which it not necessarily is; can any of our experts comment on that? best regards and thank you in advance for information---emanuel

The oil level should be checked only when the engine is running (at idle is fine though) and when it is hot.
The procedure is clearly explained in the instruction manual and should be followed.
Do not start the engine and check the oil level right away as it takes a while for the level in the reservoir to stabilize.

456M Manual page B 8: ''Oil level should be checked immediately AFTER STOPPING ENGINE." (emphasis added).

I always make sure the oil is at full operating temperature before checking.

Ferrari concessioned garages the world over and they are not all created equal. I have worked in a few and you never know who is handing out advice. Sometimes it is the kid with the broom in his hand.

Short version....The guy who said it is wrong.

However, on the 456 at least, it does read higher if you check it when the engine is running-- for whatever that is worth. When they say "immediately after shutdown" they mean immediately, not after shutting down, getting out, opening the hood, fiddling around, and then checking.

I always have the hood already open-- so I open the hood, shut it down, and check it within a few seconds.

I don't know! Sounds like a two-man operation to me. One to shut down the engine, the other to check the oil.

Well, I went back to read the manual and of course you are right.

However the first two times I checked the oil, I ended up overfillng it and had to drain some of it out again.

So now I do it with engine running and the oil in temperature and it does not happen anymore.

The advantage of doing it with the engine running is that you can fill a bit at the time and check the level as many times as you want, without fear of getting false readings.
