My 1995 456 has developed a gearshift problem. From cold, I can get all gears (including a slightly sticky 2nd) but once the car is warm, I have difficulty engaging 1st, 2nd and Reverse. It is particularly difficult to engage Reverse and even more difficult to get it out of Reverse. All the gears drive ok and there doesn't seem to be any slip on the clutch. Can anyone offer me any insights as to what might be causing this? I will probably do any remedial work myself, so I don't want to go fixing stuff that doesn't need it!

    Thanks
    Gavin

Hi Gavin I assume your 456 is a manual. If so I would guess that evan though there is no slip in your clutch it may be on the way out or if not that then your slave cylinder is weeping. Have a look at your fluid levels as if it is a little low then you have answered the question. I had a TR with similar problem and a new slave cylinder fixed it and made a great difference to the sticky second gear as well when cold.

To engage or disengage gears properly two things are necessary:

    1-your clutch must DISENGAGE completely

2-your shift linkage must be working properly and be properly aligned.

Make sure you have enough fluid in the clutch reservoir, as low fluid would affect the disengagement of the clutch.

Have your engine mounts checked to make sure your engine is sitting tight and is not rocking under load as that would affect the correct operation of the shift linkage.

    Thanks guys.
Yes, it is a manual. The fluid was low in the reservoir, so I filled it and bled the clutch. That did not seem to make any difference, but I will check to see if the slave cylinder is leaking. I will also check the engine mounts.

With regard to the shift linkage alignment, the workshop manual does not give a huge amount of information. It says to check that the fore-and-aft throw from neutral is the same distance, and also the left-and-right throw is the same distance from the sprung 3rd/4th gear position. I have checked the distances, which appear to be the same, but is there something else that I am missing?

Is there anythign else that I can / should check to ensure that the linkage is working properly?

    Thanks
    Gavin
