I decided to make a new thread b/c i'd like some help with my 456. As discussed earlier...the 456 front shocks are the "softest" part of the system and it was suggested, and my tech at the dealer agreed, that swapping to 550 front shocks would probably greatly improve the ride handling w/o too much stiffness. Well, i bought some 550 shocks and had them swapped out. The ride is quite stiff, but nice...closer to the 550s actually. But, the suspension fault icon came up on the led screen and they can't find a way to turn it off...also the suspension is in default "stiffest" mode. Swapping out the 456 for a 550 suspension ecu does not help. Everything works fine and as i said the ride is improved in my opinion, esp at speed in corners.

On a better note, the 456 steering ecu easily swaps out with the 550 fiorano (575 fiorano too, since they are the same part...and it is the same power steering system in all three cars), and the steering "feel" is much tighter...i like this minor change a lot and it really improves the sporting quality of the car.

any suggestions on the 550 shock fault?
    thanks

    Hello

What is the SD1 tester saying abut the suspension ? when you plu the tester into the car you should get precise information about what if wrong.

One clarification: did you buy new 550 front shocks or did you buy used ones ? These things go wrong all the time and if you bought used ones you may want to check all is good with them.

A further thought: I think it was not required to change the shocks per see. Inside the original 456 shocks you have a cylinder with oil inside and disks to provide the correct characteristics. I believe you can get someone like a koni dealer to re-calibrate the orignal shocks for a stiffer suspension. Should have been cost eficient as well.

    Cheers

Those are bilstein shocks and they will reset them to 550 specs for 100 each. I have my old set of 456 shocks heading in for that. That may be the solution for you. Take your old ones and send them in to be rebuilt and tell them you want them tighter.

I assume you are talking a non M 456. So my first thought is that model, GT 2+2 had three positions on the selector for the suspension. I believe the 550 had only two [someone would know better] as the 456 MGT/MGTA : SO, there would be a problem in the ECU config.

IF your tech. could hard set the settings to the hard/stiff mode in the ECU, you might be able to get rid of the light.

Had a similar problem with the Mondial T, once, which also has three selections.

Seems that until the triggers are set correctly that light, regardless of a reset in SD1 [is that possible?] will remain on.

then again, I'm a shootin' ina da darka hera

Good point. Mine is an M so I think the specs would be the same, I'm not sure about the original poster. I would think to go to three setting shock you would need 4 new actuators? That would be nice and cheap. For that much you could rebuild the whole suspension with somehting else.
Just replacing my stock shocks with new ones made a world of difference.

I am the original poster....and mine is an M and nothing the tech could do would remove the light. if you find a way let me know
I'll contact bilstein about resetting my old shocks and see if that works

Well, to help you out I am sticking to these possible problems which will be an issue.

    1. Since the ECU thinks it's in fault, the setting will be STIFF. That is the default for these setting when the trigger is set, like you are experiencing.

    2. IF you cancel the lights to satisfy your view, you will never know when they are in default.

Contacting Bilstein, good luck, will probably NOT want to get involved in the liability issue, and 'may' only advise slightly.

Seems to me, you have few choices: go back to originals, and dial in your setting.

many mechanics probably will not want to give such liability issues over the internet.

    Rock-n-hard-place.

IF I were you I would have just stuck with the originals, and set them accordingly.

    but, that's me, good luck.

Is there a final word on whether Bilstein can "re-set" stock 456M shocks to specifications other than stock?

Yes they can it is on their website. They will do a know valving or custom valving at additional cost. The generic revalve price is very cheap.

Bilstein has one facility on the West Coast and another on the East Coast and they will work with you to dial in a different setting.
Also on the plus side, their prices are very reasonable.
The only problem with Bilstein is that they are very busy and consequently it takes time to have the shocks back.
There is another outfit, called Delta Vee or something like that, near Chicago I believe, that works on shocks and will do all kind of modifications as well.
They are fast, but they are pricey.
