I have no idea how much tennis racquets cost or anything.

I'm looking for a good tennis racquet. I was hoping for $100 or so, but if you have to go higher to be reasonably good, that's ok I guess.

Also, looking for a cheaper men's and cheaper women's racquet just to keep lying around for friends if they need them.

    Thanks.

I'm looking for a cheap racket too, I've only played 4 times, Im going to start going now, but I just need something cheap, since I'm terrible and I'd feel like a poser with something good.

www.holabirdsports.com is a well known tennis wholesaler mail order place that sells every racquet made and has extensive reviews, and rates racquets depending on skill level, and what you're looking for... I bought many tennis products, I been a customer there for 20 years...

I think they also offer a demo service where you pay shipping and they deduct the cost of the demo trial if you buy from there...

make sure you get a good ppi from a reputable guy who deals in these things often.

Seriously, for a $100 any decent tennis shop should be able to get you started. My advice is shop at a dedicated tennis place and not one of those huge sports stores where nonbody knnows anything about anything. I'm particularly fond of Wilson racquets.

Wilson Hyper Hammer series or Wilson Triad series are good for your price range. I am not much of a tennis player. Just play once in a month or so when I have the time. I would not recommend buying the racquets online. They are very touch and feel type of products. Maybe once you know what exactly you are looking for you can look online for the best deal. Dedicated smaller Tennis stores are always willing to negotiate the prices. You know about negotiating. You are from the city. :)

Reasonably priced and in the New York area? HA, good luck. :) I'd love to play a lot this summer too, but I don't have a home course. My parents are in New Jersey, so I aim to go for the public courses in that area, but they are crowded (generally with aged retirees), and it's a pain to get tee times (it's through some annoying automated telephone service.) So, lately, it's just been the range for me. But, I'll try to get out some a bit later in the season.

The advice to go to a tennis store is probably good advice. I was planning to go to Models tomorrow, but it would probably be a good idea to go to a specialist store to get better insight.

If you want to go to a store to check out racquets, your best bet is Paragon Sports on 18th and Broadway, the salespeople there are knowledgeable, and they have a huge tennis selection, but they charge retail prices...

The public course right near my house is in really good shape, as good or better than some private courses I played on.. they just spent over $2 million on renovations.... shoot me an email if you are interested in playing sometime... There are nice public courses in Westchester too and parts of Bergen County...

I only hit at ranges with natural grass... Practicing on mats is a waste of time and does nothing for your game... Unfortunately, there are very few grass ranges except at Country Clubs around here... Down in VA where I lived..every decent course had a nice range and a good chip and putt area...

I play(and have played) extensively for a long time now. By extensively, I mean, on teams, tourney's, 3+hrs practice/ day, etc...

I only use one racquet(I have 5 of them ;) ). It was originally created in the 80's, and is what Agassi and Chang started playing with. There is much history, and many dedicated users of this racquet. Prince even "remade" it because of demand, a testament as to it's quality. I personally use the 93in headsize(Midsize).

    Prince Graphite Original

I suggest you check it out at this link: http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageRCPRINCE-GRO.html I buy a lot of tennis accessories, and Tennis Warehouse has the cheapest prices, and best service IMHO. The price is only $120.

Send me a PM or email and we can talk more about tennis if you have any questions.

    HTH.

Those are also good racquets. I used to use a Wilson Prostaff 6.0 original(like Sampras', only Midplus headsize). I'm sold on the Prince I mentioned above now though ;)

Funny, my friend the tennis instructor is the same way. He's constantly scouring ebay for his particular out-of-production raquet. He currently has about a dozen of them.

I played the original Wilson Pro Staff 85in. for 10 yrs and been playing with the Head 280 midplus for the last 8 because I got in an accident and had surgery on my shoulder and needed a more forgiving racquet..

I am thinking of switching back to the original Pro Staff, because I can do things with that raquet, that I can't do with the Head...

I prefer Holabird over tennis warehouse, only because I been a customer there 20 yrs... but they both offer similar services...

I scavenge Ebay for out of Production wilson Prostaff's 85in. made in St. Vincent and Head 280's made in Austria from 10 years..

The current Wilson prostaffs 85in are made in China and are garbage... ditto the Head 280..

6.5 I think. That's for pretty slow swing, I think... It may not have been the right choice, but I'm no pro.

Yes, these rackets are what I used, too. Very easy to hit, and don't require a strength to kill a ball for passing shots!

I suggest getting this & some old normal size racket from garage sales. Use old type for warm-up, and you'll be surprised how much a new racket can do for your shots.

Those St. Vincent's pull a nice penny even today still... I agree, the 85in. has a lot of merits, and it's suprising how it's staying competitive still compared to todays larger more technological racquets.

Kenny, have you even tried out the Prince Graphite Original I spoke of? You might like it if you're a fan of those two racquets.

Yes, didn't like it, The prince graphite works better in the oversize 110 version which was the original design and not for me... The mid 90 didn't have the right feel I was looking for and doesn't have the accuracy or versatility the original Pro Staff has...

I see a few old school guys who played college tennis still use the 110... I have not come across any advanced players using the mid..
