Hi Montreal F-Chatters and F-Chatters planning the trip to Montreal F1.
I'm starting to finalize my plans for F1 weekend this year. Was wondering if anyone knows the best/cheapest place to stay during the F1 weekend. Last year I stayed at the Hilton Airport but it was to far from Downtown and the track...I'd prefer to stay near a Metro station or stop (I believe that's what you guys call your TTC or Subway System).
Any input on the following hotels (cheap and near subway stops) ; Days Hotel Montreal at 1005 Rue Guy ($266/night) and Auberge Royal Versailles at 7200 Rue Sherbrooke Est ($220/night)
    Thanks
    Rocco

Days Hotel is downtown, near concordia university... you will be about 2 mins walking distance from crescent street....lots of action.

Auberge Royal Versailles .... geez... thats 5 mins from where I live, but about 25min ride in the metro/subway to downtown. You will have to commute all the time by subway or taxi.... and when I pull out the 512TR early in the morning, chances are I will wake you up... its up to you... personally, I would hitch a place downtown, pay a bit more, but save time from taking and costs of taking the subway, taxi... etc.

I would recommend .. hotel l'appartement... because its about 10min walk to St.Laurent street... and you are downtown as well, about 10min walk from crescent. So one night you can hang out on crescent street, and another night on st.laurent....

Thanks for such a quick response...I knew it would be a good idea to ask on F-Chat!
    I wouldn't mind being awakened by MannyGT2's 512 and then go see the F1 race....what a day...I can't wait.

ummmm... no... maybe i wasn't clear... hotel l'apartment is at about midpoint between st.laurent and crescent...

basically... when you get out of the hotel, if you go 10min east... you hit st.laurent..... if you go 10 (ok maybe 15?)min west... you hit crescent... either or.... the walk isn't so bad, and during GP weekend, there is action everywhere.

a quick pic of my car on the Montreal GP track.... where this car belongs!
Picture was taken by Stephan of course! (PS, in the background, you see a blurred F355)

My wife and I stayed for one night at the Hotel Nelligan last September and thought it was a great boutique hotel in Old Montreal.

    Some reviews of the hotel:

I find TripAdvisor reviews to be very helpful and reliable - have used them for US (south, mid-south, northwest, NYC) Canada and Europe. You might do some comparisons. I used them to find the Hotel Nelligan.

IMO, you're better off staying near downtown, ie Crescent st, St Cathatrines...etc.

From my many years of experience in the Montreal GP, I've stayed in a dozen different hotels all around the city (expensive and cheap).

If you like the nightlife, restaurants, pubs, bars, car shows, all the action is on Crescent st. It is simply not worth saving a few bucks to take the subway or cab into downtown, traffic is a nightmare and you will be wasting precious time in the commute. Staying at the Sheraton, Novotel or DeLaMontagne are the best options. They are abit pricey ($400/ night) but a 2 minute walk will take you right into the heart of the action, and you are able to go back to the hotel to change, shower, drop off shopping bags, etc. without having to take a 15 min cab ride.

Many hotels don't offer breakfast, and trust me, during the GP weekend every breakfast place has a 45 min line up (200,000 tourists!).

That's right. Downtown is best. On Peel here are a couple. I've stayed at the Mariott right in front of Cavalli and it was nice. Down the street there is Best Western Europa (?) which was also good. Right on Sherbrooke there are quit a few fancy hotels. Also right on Rene Levesque.

Yup, funny thing is that whenever I ask people if they had a good time at the GP, the ones who stayed downtown always said 'yes!'.....and the ones who stayed further away and had to commute into town, they always said 'no!' ...:)

Its SOOOO much easier to walk out of your hotel and into the action central. Whenever we had to cab somewhere for dinner, clubs, etc... we were always late and always p#ssed off about the traffic and time.

Another secret........if you are going to watch the race and you have a car (rental, or your own) park it at the Casino the night before, then after the race you can drive away without waiting 2 hours for the subway, or walk 5 miles to the taxi stand.

(When it is 35 degrees and humid, the last thing you'd want is to wait in line with 200,000 crazy people!)

    Just my .02

In 9 yrs that i have gone, the metro is a work of art. I have never had any issues and 2 hrs is not the norm by any stretch.

I would forgo the car thing. My personal opinoin

In my years that I've gone, I always had to wait 2 hours in line at the Ille Notre Dame subway stop on the Island. The only trick is to leave the race early to avoid the rush.

Hey we're not all rich like you, we can't afford VIP subway passes and Ferrari Pit passes, and breakfast with Schumi! Bums like me have to wait in line. :D:D
