I have a cage project and need a good cagebuilder. it is in relation to my bmw csl project. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=172553 I like that cage, very strong, I am not hearing good things about ireland engineering's cage abililties but maybe that is from the lack of project oversight. I am assigning TNO motorsports in Glendale to oversee the project as my proxy.
Call Andy Bondio at Bondio Fabrication. The guy is a welding god and makes awesome race equipment. You can give him my name, I used to be his neighbor and his customer. Bondio Fabrication 22130 S Vermont Ave Ste G, Torrance, CA 90502-2154, United States Phone: (310) 783-0515
No crap! I am working at an ad agency in Torrance and the car is in Wilmington right now. I'll call him in the AM and swing by at lunch to see what he says.
Jim Beck of Beck Development in Mountain View, CA. had a gold all-aluminum 2800CS that he setup with a 2.8L motor and twin-turbos. It was a Pfaff (not sure the spelling is correct) turbo. He had enormous BBS rims on the car. The windows were blacked out to hide the roll cage inside. I know he used to race the car, and he was quite big in the BMW circut in the mid-80's with the turbos. I remember seeing the car once when the heads were off. The pistons were so huge, they looked like coffee cans. He called his car "The Posrsche Killer". You might want to see if he's still around. I'm sure he could tell you who made his cage.
I'd have to recommend an old buddy of mine: http://www.redzoneracefabrication.com/main.html (view in IE, I don't know why it won't show in firefox) http://www.hotrod.com/projectbuild/hrdp_0703_project_f_bomb_chassis_build/index.html He's not a specialist in any sort of car but he's definitely a perfectionist. Might be worth a shot to see what he says.
Slumming at Saatchi? Nothing like finding an automotive vendor a couple blocks away, considering that racecar/ vintage car prep typically requires driving from Riverside to West Covina to Lakewood to Paramount to 1000 Oaks... you get the idea. But if you need other roll cage options, I have some. When are we going to toss a Lacrosse ball around?....
I talked to aout 4 shops, and my project manager went to visit 3 of them, and I am waiting to hear back from him on his findings. Ireland seems the most economical so far, but then again, I want the cage my way, so tack on a few more grand to make it survivable and yet not too heavy. PVC roll cage FTW!
ok, so I found a good cage builder as recommended by another CSL owner. It seems that I have no choice, but the care will be Chromoly. I'll have to dull that sucker down. That will be gone for a few months as the shops are backed up and the holidays. The better strength-to-weight ratio pleases me too.
Agent 47 in Carlsbad builds awesome stuff. Theyve done many cages that fit race specifications. 760-496-3809 ask for Corey
TC Design Nor cal has built and within spec rollcages for pro and club racing. Call Tony 408-956-1526.He also built the cage of our Mitsubishi EVO that we ran in NASA.
There isn't a better metal fabricator around than Andy. Unfortunately, he has more work than he can handle and is in high demand from racing teams and factory R&D (like Honda). He is a man of very high integrity and he does amazing work. Andy will probably refer you to his old friend Clark Drake (who is just down the street from Andy). Clark has extensive experience in CART and IRL racing. My composite master fabricator worked with Andy for many years at Cunningham Racing. Brad
Car is going to a well-known BMW fabricator, Rob Inhout (sp?) mid-December. In order to exit and enter the car for vintage racing type timechecks, the doorbars seen above may be too agressive.
