I am thiking about getting some 550 wheels for my 348. But the offset on the rears seem to make them stick aout a tad to far. Does anybody have any idea how much there could be machined off the inside of the mounting flange? A picture that shows the inside of a 550 wheel would be great! regards
lars - you might want to dig up chris "pizzaman" and ask his opinion - he put 550 wheels on his 308 and had to do major surgery on the rears. fwiw, doody
i think there was a recall on 550 wheels because they may crack. before you buy used wheels, check if they are the corrected wheels.
I think someone may be trying to unload some of those recalled wheels on ebay. Check out Item number: 170163349491
Not sure about the wheels on eBay, but the recalled 550 magnesium wheels had solid spokes forming a solid D shape; feel the backside of the spoke and if it is flat, it's the recalled wheel. The replacement aluminum wheel has concave spokes forming a C shape open to the inside. Make / Models : FERRARI / 550 MARANELLO Model/Build Years: 1997-1999 Recall Number: 01V297000 Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE WHEEL BOLT INSERTS FITTED IN THE MAGNESIUM WHEEL CAN SHOW SIGNS OF CRACKING. Consequence: IF THE WHEEL BOLT INSERTS BEGIN TO CRACK, A REDUCTION OF THE TORQUE APPLIED TO THE WHEEL WOULD RESULT. VEHICLE HANDLING COULD BE AFFECTED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE ALL FOUR MAGNESIUM WHEELS WITH WHEELS MADE OF ALUMINUM, WHICH ARE NOT FITTED WITH INSERTS. ALL THE WHEEL BOLTS WILL ALSO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE ALUMINUM WHEELS REQUIRE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF BOLT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 1, 2001. I went back to the ebay website and looked for the telltale items you mentioned. Maybe I'm seeing things but it sure looks like these are recalled wheels: the back of the spokes look flat and there appear to be inserts in the bolt holes.
Can anybody confirm that the part numbers 165110 (front) and 165112 (rear) were the recalled rims and 179378 (front) and 179379 (rear) the improved replacing rims?
Yes, Remko. Part numbers 165110 (front) and 165112 (rear) were the recalled speedline magnesium wheels and 179378 (front) and 179379 (rear) are the replacement BBS aluminum wheels... There are still a few recalled wheels out there being sold to unsuspecting customers. With the original recall, dealerships had to replace the wheels with the BBS wheels and destroy the speedline magnesium wheels. Barry
New old stock full sets still available from Eurospares for around $1400 + shipping. https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/550-maranello/brakes-wheels/wheels-19874/179378set
I purchased my set of OEM wheels from Eurospares and they are the real deal. Amazing value. They told me they bought a warehouse full of these wheels, probably from BBS? And they just need to liquidate to make room for other inventory.
