I've talked to couple mechs on this: recently getting a cold, NOISY sound on driver's side top bank of what seems to be near the upper belt gear or cam gear, that is right in the front area on driver's side only.

When it gets properly warmed up it seems to go away.

I am getting nervous in that it could be a bad bearing ready to go near upper front.

anyone have experience or understanding of this !

my crank pulley sounded like it was coming from there.

    It was separated.

    Hej,

    any more news on this??,
my engine sounds like something that could be described as a crank clonking sound but the sound more comes from the front top of the engine, it's very hard to locate.
I first thought of valve clapper which I know well from previos alfas but this is more powerful.
I have heard connection rod bearing failures before which really sounds like you running a cement mixer, this is nowhere near as bad but it is very obvious it shouldn't be there, something is loose or worn/broken.
Otherwise the engine runs smooth with 5 bars oil pressure at 2100 rpm with warm engine and the oiltemp staying well below 100C.

I will drain the sump tomorrow of oil tomorrow and look for metall particles, I just hope it is not as I really do not feel for a enigne out job at the moment..

Buy a harbor freight and tool.com automotive stethescope and pinpoint the noise. Noise travels funny. In the red area circled there are no bearings just bearing cap surfaces that do not make noises like bearings. There are drive bearings that drive the timing cogs low and tensioner bearings and a water pump up there too which are obvious suspects .

while you don't have the stethoscope you can try to locate it using a stick of hard wood that you put on your ear.

Good luck, and please let us know.

Could be a few things - does it sound like a bearing, a kind of rumbling sound, but constant?
Or, does it sound less regular? Does it start immediately the engine is started, or some time after?

Noise travels in strange ways in alloy engines! One noise in mine that had me beat was a noisy oil pump drive chain - started a couple of seconds after start from cold, and I would have sworn that it came from the camshaft area.

Look in the filters as well.

    Hej,

I have been able to find out two things.

    1. the oil does not contain any metallic signs, this is very good.
    2. With a cold engine the sound is noticable but nothing to worry about, it is just apart of the general rattle of an engine that has run 100000km. So basically what we have here is an enlarged play somewhere within (my guess).

The sound is not a grinding one and does definetely not sound like a seized bearing (cement mixer), if the bearing was broken it would have sounded horrible even when the engine was cold, could it be piston pin bearing play?.

If the 456 engine would have had hydralic tappets, this is the sound it would have made but with a little more bass, I recon it comes from the front of the engine but since it sound similar on both banks it might probably not be the cams.
