Conventional wisdom tells us that all US-spec F50's had fuel cells from the factory and that they need to be replaced every 10 years unless the car has been driven on a regular basis. Now, in answer to specific inquiries to two franchised US Ferrari dealers who both then supposedly contacted FNA, we are being told that most US F50's did not have fuel cells but had plastic fuel tanks. The fuel cell was an option and it was usually only on F50's that were specifically headed for track use. If you have any hands-on information about this issue would you please share it with us? Don't tell us that every US F50 had a fuel cell simply because that is what you have heard from the many self-appointed experts.

I can only tell you what my dealer told me. I was told that theat they were some type of rubber fuel tank that FNA suggested you replace every 10 years driven or not? Cost approx $10-13k USD?

Pretty sure it has "fuel bladders". Rubber bag-like things that expand when you fill them and contract as they are emptied.

    I'm no expert though :)

Thanks to the hands-on knowledge of two former natioanl service managers for FNA, I have found out that all of the US-spec F50's came with a fuel cell and that their service requirements suggest replacing it every 10 years

I thought that this may be of interest to some. My F50 is having it's annual service at the moment and these date stamps were discovered after the access covers were removed. My car is very late (341) in the series, finished mid 1998. You will note that the date stamps are considerably earlier than this, probably indicating that the tank units were assembled in batches early on and stockpiled for later use in the production run. So theoretically your car may be due for tank re certification a lot sooner than it's build date indicates.

The dates are variously 1995 through 1996.

I have found this to be true on many one-off ish exotics... most recently, the 2 weeks "old" (since delivered) Veyron has visible date stampings that I've seen so far that are 03/07, 05/07, and 07/07.. not a huge range.. but interesting.

I suspect that any replacement tanks you get will be from the same production run. I.e. the tanks only deteriorate when in contact with petrol, otherwise they would last for all eternity. So, 10 years service life, not 10 years from tank production date.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be looking into it. If they are OEM I hope that they are not contractually prevented from supplying directly to customers.

To be expected I guess; but it's interesting that in my case the tanks are years away form the cars production date.

Entirely possible. My mechanic always reckons replacement timing belts have probably been sitting on the shelf for years too.

    Dear Comrades,

The fuel cells as fitted within UK/Euro F-40's and US/UK/Euro F-50's are not bladders as many appear to believe them to be. Furthermore, when placing an order, it is important to instruct your Ferrari dealer prior to placement of order to establish the precise manufacturing date stamped upon the tanks that are to be supplied. It is my understanding that it is the actual date upon the tanks along with date upon the certificates that are provided with the tanks that determine the service life-span and not the date that the tanks were installed. Accordingly, it is possible to acquire tanks from Ferrari SpA that have a service life of much less than the mandatory ten years. For example, should the tanks be four years old at the date of installation then the tanks will require replacing in six years hence.

    With kind regards,

    512 Tea Are
