does anyone know when the gto started being called the 288 gto. i rememebr magazine articles etc at the time of launch and the numbers 288 were never mentioned. In fact one original UK owner (the owner of ferrari dealership) had the plate 308gto on his.
They were the 288 GTO from when they came out in '84 as far as I know. Although I am not sure if it says 288 on it? Just like the 599 GTB Fiorano doesn't say Fiorano on it.
Until I read your question I thought that the car was called 288 GTO from the outset and it never occurred to me that it might have been called anything else. I understand why it is called the 288 GTO and I would be surprised if it had any other name at any earlier time
All the documents I have including internal training school documents only refer to it as GTO. I suspect going from memory we started adding 288 or just calling it 288 to eliminate confusion but then we also had 250 GTO's around too so the confusion in our case was real.
