I count myself among the purists, but I must confess that this looks very nice to me. Congratuations on a nice result after much work.
As long as you are happy then that's really all that matters! However, sorry, but 18s look way too big on a 328. 17s are the max that look like they might belong there. The brakes also now look tiny & undersized - you can do something about the fronts (using 360 parts I think) but the rears (with the handbrake inside the hub of the disk) would be a lot more of a problem (unless you sorted out another handbrake mechanism Overall, I think not a good use of $5000 - especially as you now need to spend another $2-$3000 on the brakes to make them look right! Thanks for showing the true cost of doing something like this by the way - that's appreciated. While I see you've still got snow on the ground, any clues on the handling & ride? Did you get a full suspension setup done on this to dial the things in? I.
That is very eye-catching! Purists can always see stock 328s at any car show, but your approach helps modernize a classic look that is only rooted in another time by the wheels and the pop-up headlights. Not that I advocate doing anything with the headlights, but hell, I never thought I'd like modern wheels on a classic car, so bring on the headlight mods....
I like em...you can always switch back if you ever wanted to have the stock look. So, no big deal -it not like you've done an interior or exterior body modification that can not be reversed. Good on ya.
Yes, it looks good. Would you consider lowering it a bit to "fit" the wheel better within the fender/rear quarter panels?
Afraid I clicked this thread open despite the warning... and I agree with Iain. The 360 is a much larger car, approximately 5 inches taller than the 328, so I think it wears larger wheels better. It also benefits by having nicely finished calipers, which the 328 lacks. But, it is your car, and if you opt to sell at some point the next owner can put it back to original if he wants.
I also think they are too big for the car and too open for the calipers cosmetically. They would look nice in a smaller size, I think, though. I also very much appreciate your detailing the expense and parts used, very good feedback for someone considering the same thing. Not my cup of tea but thanks for posting. Jeff
Lowering would be a disaster where I live.... the wheels are exactly the same as what came off relative to outside diameter
Not without some suspension changing... the tires are ~.5" wider than the stock size taken off and there is very little clearance between inner sidewall and the spring / shock.
I realize now I converted US to CDN wrong way here is a better estimate: Goodyear F1's Rear: 255/35ZR18 480.00CDN each frt: 225/40ZR18 430.00CDN each TOTAL 1944.00CDN ~1655.00US Used wheels 1500.00US + shipping 200.00US Narrow rears to 8.5" 250.00US + shipping 50.00US (WELDCRAFT) 10 stock 360 wheel bolts (Hill Engineering - RICAMBI) 10 360 +20mm wheel bolts (Hill Engineering - RICAMBI) 2 20mm spacers (Hill Engineering - RICAMBI) 475.00US + shipping 40.00US Mount and Balance tires 210.00CDN ~180.00US Total cost ~$4350.00US $5000.00CAN plus the gas and time.
I plan to clean up and paint my calipers red this spring before I drive it much. I have every intention of upgrading the brakes at a later date, but then I am not sure the original wheels will fit. I have no intention of selling this car, so even though I have all the original parts they are of little use to me. (I also am NOT selling them) The cost of these mods is not a factor in the decision...
Glenn, I too happen to believe the 360 wheel looks best on a 308/328. I was getting rid of the old 7.5 x 14 rims so i could get current tires. I happen to have exactly the same size goodyear F-1s on my 77 308, the green one. My cost here in the good old us of a was $3319. And for those purists out there, i would point out that all of these changes are reversable, if one would want too. Further, the wheels are of the highest quality - BBS, O.E. equipment. For those of you interested in stopping as well as possible, or filling the big hole, i am about to install 355x32 mm Brembo discs and F-50 calipers up front and 360 challenge rear calipers on 330x28 Girodisc challenge rotors with stock 360 parking brakes. This will be within 2% of stock F/R balance. Martin at Girodisc has been enthusiastiac and extaordinarily helpfull in fabricating the brackets, hats and helping me to get the pieces together. cheers, chris Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Me no likey.. I think the classic 5-star 308 wheel is perfect for these cars. I do have 17" Speedlines on my 1977 GTB, and they look perfect, like a mini 288GTO. I think the 360 18"s are just too big, and modern. But hey, that's just my opinion....worth about what you paid for it! Greg
This is a trial fit of the F-50 brakes on the 308. 40-44 mm pistons & 355x32 front rotors. (this is also identical to the 360 Brembo Big Brake Kit). Back brakes will be 360 challenge, (36-40 brembos over 330x28 discs. Hats, caliper adaptors and rear discs from the good guys at Girodisc. P-brake will be 360 and a bigger mc with proportioning valve is in the works too. I will post weights and costs soon in a new thread. thanks, chris Image Unavailable, Please Login
DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! It is YOUR car, jack her up 4 inches and put dubs on her if you so desire. Add wings, wheel well flares... whatever. What truly matters is that YOU love the car.
Very nice Glen! I wish I could have kept mine, because my car is an 89 the rears stuck out past the fender by an inch. The fronts fit perfectly without spacers! Enjoy it.
To me, they make the car look like a Hot Wheels 328. But, as has been said, as long as you like it. I prefer things to be all original...the biggest thing is not only for you to like it, but to enjoy it. I still stare at my 308 when I walk by it in the garage. I get a huge kick out of the fact that I own my dream car. Drive it, enjoy it!
The car looks fantastic...really updates the look of the car...which already looks great! The bubble tire look is so outdated ...many strides in tire tech have taken place since those days...
