Hey everyone. I managed to pull my lower timing gear bearing without the Sykes twinpull. I tried ordering a twinpull, but I was told by a main distributor in England that they are on intergalactic back-order until at least 1/07. Scratch that idea. Here is what I did:
I went to Autozone and purchased a timing bearing puller for $12.99, and then I headed to the hardware store and purchased two long thin bolts. I ground the heads of the bolts flat on either end just enough to allow passage through the part of the bearing I had already drilled out. One the ground bolt heads were inside, I turned the non-ground part of the bolt head so it would grab both the inner and outer races. I added fender washers and a nut at the end. Made sure both sides were even once the puller was installed. Turn the 3/4" puller bolt for extraction. A small crack notifed the bond the bearing had made with its housing broke and out it came (took quite a bit of force). The tool is still in perfectly usable condition, so if anyone is interested in using it, let me know.

Very clever! Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?

Great idea. What socket did you use to get the nut off? Do you have a pic of it. Thanks.

Ultimately, I had to cut the nut off with an assortment of dremel bits (very carefully). I soaked it in penetrating oil for about three days. I had the correct socket (borrowed), but even with an impact it would not budge. I have a new nut on order because for some strange reason I thought I might be able to get the old one off in one reusable piece (never will I assume that again). For those of you who are going to tackle this job soon, plan on acquiring all new fastening bits. They are about $10 each from Mccann.

Intergalactic back order, I love it.
