I got an interesting call today. It was from a person that was trying to help someone else find a Ferrari starter motor. He said that it was for a boat with two Ferrari aluminum V-8 engines. He said that whoever was in possesion of the boat removed one starter motor that was bad and that it was somehow lost. He asked if I could help them find a replacement if they took off the other starter motor and brought it to me as a sample. I am not familiar with the organization, but he said that the boat was to be auctioned by the "Marine Training Center" as a fund raiser. He was very short on information about any aspect of the boat. The only other thing that he said was that there was "a bunch of Webers."

I do get a fair number of calls that never have any followup. I was wondering if anyone knew of any series produced boats that used Ferrari engines, or is this just one man's bad idea. If they ever do show up with the starter motor, is anyone interested in further information?

It might be a home made (expensive) project, the only official Ferrari boat was a one of and is very well documented so it definitely wouldn't be that.

If you could get some pics and post them it would be great

Probobly 308 or 328 motors, try TRutlands - they have used Ferrari parts.

The ebay thing is absurd, but I've always wanted to power a runabout with a ferrari engine, and I'm sure someone else already has - a lot of boats are powered by car motors.

Thanks all for your input. Townshend, those were enlightening and entertaining links!

If these people do follow through, I will see if I can go and see the boat and take some pictures. I wonder if the starter motor is even Ferrari. It might be determined by whatever kind of drive or gearbox is used.

Back in the eighties there were quite a few 10cyl lamborghini powered offshore race boats running around. With all stern drive boats primarily powered by gm sbc or bbc blocks I imagine it would be hard for lamborghini to sell very much, especially with the need for an expensive tranny/drive system.

I remember in the 80's there was talk of ferrari boxer marine engines.
Porche did some 928 marine motors.

The Lambo engines were marketed by mercury marine at one point. They were countach motors scaled up, In some markets where emissions were not an issue the boat motor could be had in a LM002.

I saw a show on the discovery channel several years ago that showcased a speedboat with not one, not two but THREE Lamborghini Diablo V-12 motors in it making 1,500 horsepower. I'm sure there must be some information on this monster somewhere?

Are you saying it had 1500 horsepower per motor, or total, as 1500hp total is not that much for a powerboat, or at least not enough to make it well known. Do you remember if the boat was a catamaran or vee-hull? also, i need to correct my previous post above, as they were not 10cyl, but obviously 12cyl lambo motors.

It was 1500 horsepower total, 500 per motor. It was a vee-hull. I don't know much about boats, but my dad has one with a 350 V-8 in it and it's not that fast, but I figured 3 lambo v-12s would be a pretty crazy boat! What would be impressive in the speedboat world? --ready to be shocked and amazed!!--
