I am getting some pretty serious buzzing and rattling out of the shifter box around 6K rpm especially in third gear. Linkage underneath to the gearbox is solid and it is definitely confined to the box directly under the stick. Supposedly there are a couple of lateral 'pucks' in there that tend to wear out or need adjusting. Holding onto the stick with a vulcan death grip does eliminate it. Has anybody else aware had this issue, repaired, or heard of the issue being rectified? Thanks, Bill
Well, so far I found only that the problem is is not uncommon. This is all I found out at www.the355.com http://the355.com/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13&Itemid=28 Rattling Gear Stick: Some cars suffer from a rattle coming from around the gear stick area which, if you put your hand on the gear knob, can be stopped. This is caused by a worn bush at the bottom of the gear stick and is nothing to worry about. Correction might be a lengthy process though as access is likely to be from underneath the vehicle. Does anyone know what parts are needed?
mine does it,, annoying,,,, has done it for a year now,, tried taking the top cover of,, but no good,, and the full undertrays need to come off to see underneath,,, if anyone finds out how to sort easily,, please let me know,, my car will be going for the engine out service in a couple of month and it will be sorted then,,,, so will post what happens regards scott..
Daniel @ Ricambi sent me this parts pic. Has anyone done this before? Are the 348 (in the pic) and 355 the same shifter assemblies? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yup nothing big deal. Here is the how to, with pics even : http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72446 No, but they do come out the bottom the same way. There are four bolts holding them to the bottom of the floor pan, the guts are completly different though, much better on the 355.
That's great right up. So, now what do you do to attack the rattle? Is it where the actual stick lever is held, or deeper down? My guess is the U-shaped bent rod that moves the two brass doo-hickies at the bottom. It looks like if you had play there you'd have a little slack. Sure is hard to tell from here. Mine only rattles a little bit at low speeds in certain gears at certain rpm. But I'd love to go after it next year (new house, new garage, new lift). Anybody know the parts needed for the fix? Thanks!
Nope. (Despite the rattle, the F355 is a VAST improvement in drivability and shift performance than the 348.) Here's the F355 version: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had thought the 355 was a rod linkage... Still, anybody know which part it is taht should be replaced to help the rattle in a 355? (and that should have bee "write up" not "right up"...)
It is, if you look at the diagram that JRR posted the rod is #35. According to what Brian said, if I'm not mistaken, the part that needs to be replaced would be #10 on the 355 diagram.
Looks like a pretty involved job: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72446 Thanks for posting the link ernie . Now, I am wondering how many of those shifter parts for the 355 are plastic and should probably be changed while the assembly is out. Maybe there should be a parts kit for this? Daniel? Since I am currently reworking my exhaust by-pass valve. I "might as well" tackle this too!
Thanks! i wonder if anyone wants to design a more durable replacement part? This is one of those common issues that most folks with a manual 355 would do eventually. Anybody from Hill Engineering here? Daniel, any suggestions? and how much is part #10? From the look of it (small poly bushing) I am guessing $150.
Theres a thread started by lotusk on this drama. He had the issue, most probably still does, and i have the fix. The issue is the 20 dollar plastic bush No 10. I guarantee replacement is fruitless. You can buy 100 of these and still the buzzing persists... All the f1 guys run in now and say... Yay! finally a stick issue! In a nutshell once No.10 snaps over the ball its not firm enough in the shift rod, causing the buzzing. Its fixable but as is everything on our beloved 355s, its a pita...
before giving up on my OCD on this issue... I read many threads.. all forms of fixes/results seem to vary.. from replacing multiple of those little pieces in the diagram with no improvement to simply opening, cleaning, re-greasing with good results.. none of which I attempted.. as for my personal car.. when buzzing occurs, it is mainly in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.. at lower rpms.. when it does happen I just hold the stick until it passes the buzzing range.. often my hand is already there.. so no big deal.. when the car is driven thoroughly over day, reaching full temp several times in a day, it lessens or stops completely..
As stated in previous threads.. At some point all stick cars will encounter this issue. 3rd gear is the sweet spot for buzzing around 6k rpm. ocd or not i fixed mine. Some cars did this from new.
Mine buzzed like mad when I first got the car (a 97 spider). When I took off the gate while cleaning the interior properly, I cleaned out the inside of the shifter box as well as could. Then greased the **** out of it from above with silicone spray. I pushed down on the shifter (as you would to get to reverse) to allow a bigger gap for the silicone to flow down. This stopped my buzzing problem for now and been about a year. It will return I'm sure as others have shared and have prebought the little plastic knuckle for when have to finally take it apart. Dave - this is something you should solve and make us a little kit with proper stainless part please. $99 shipped
good stuff. I tried similar, lifted the gate vacuumed/cleaned and sprayed some lubricant down inside. it may have helped a bit. but I did not think to push the shifter down to open it up and get lubricant further in. I'll try that next time!
just a fyi.....my gear shift rattled but not because of the shifter plastic part. My motor mounts were sagging and when replaced the buzzing noise in the shifter stopped....so check your mounts as well.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I'll take a look at my motor mounts and also spray some WD-40 down the shifter as well.
