To be honest, there are probably more people on here that have to make "sacrifices" like you have mentioned, to own their Ferrari rather than those who can just go and write a check out for $200k. Just my consensus.

Perhaps people might be more willing to answer your query if they knew why you asked it ?

But as a tease I'll tell you that I think a very large percentage of the people here cannot just write a USD 200000 cheque and saved and scrimped to be able to own the car of their dreams

 

Well, life is a matter of perspective. Most of the people who lead boring lives are actually just boring themselves

i sacrificed ALOT of time....I work like all the time, but it paid off and is still paying off. I rarely ever see friends. i also sacrificed a bunch of cars i use to have....but it really just worked out. The first Ferrari is by far the hardest one to get....the rest come easier.

 

Further to your first post I think we could view a small business owner who is looking at a 355 for their first as well heeled ! Many folk here struggled to get a 308....

 

I'll bite.

I work a 9-5 every weekday. Weekends off.
I work for a major corporation that serves the tri-state area.
Some might call my job a "small cog in a big machine".
I don't own a business, let alone a "small" business.
I earn a paycheck.
I CANNOT write a check for ANY Ferrari I want.
I own a 1985 Mondial Qv Cabriolet.

BUT...

I do NOT live a boring lifestyle.
I also own two boats, a Jeep and the wife's minivan.
I own my own house (OK, it's still the bank's technically)
I enjoy driving AND repairing my Ferrari (did I mention it's a Mondial?)
I have a wonderful family.

Was I afraid to "pull the trigger"? Nope. I bought a reasonably priced Mondial Cab. No second thoughts or sleepless nights.

Buy one and enjoy it.

Excuse me but it's a beautiful day out and I want to take the kids out for a spin (I'm on vacation as I write this). The misses will be home to sign for the FedEx package of parts from FoUK.

 

And you still don't care enough to fill out you profile... goodbye.

 

Look up Gilnsammy. He has a nice 308 and has a regular job / life outside the Ferrari. But he is passionate about the car and is also an interesting guy. I'll let him tell you about the 308.

If you have the balls to be self-employed, pulling the trigger on a Ferrari should be easy.

Honestly, how much of a risk is it buying a dream car? I'm assuming you're not talking about getting an Enzo as your first Ferrari purchase, but more along the lines of a 308/348/355. If so, how much are you actually risking with such a purchase? Let's say you went out and bought a 308 for $35K, then discovered that it was a flood car. Even if this did happen, would STILL have people breaking down your doors willing to buy your car for $20K.

This is about the worst case scenario - and you are only "risking" $15K.

Sudz, I am a small business owner as well. I probably should not have anywhere near the money in cars that I do and would be better off financially if it was invested in real estate or currency or whatever.
My life is not boring at all, but very full and rich in many of the ways that matter.
But, the thing is, I really enjoy the cars. I enjoy the sounds and sights of ownership, the thrill of seeing the cars in the garage even and the kick that so many others get out of them as well.
I am having some work done at the house and I had several of the guys out to the garage to check out the 360. They were so fun to watch and talk to as they moved about the car, checking the lines, being amazed by the glass engine cover and sitting in the car. The next day the all brought their cameras and we did it again. ONe afternoon, I will fire it up and take each of them out for a spirited drive. I overheard them talking 3 hours after the first garage visit and they were still talking Ferrari this and Ferrari that.
That kind of stuff is priceless and we all remember the first time we saw/sat or drove some treasured car.
Its all a part of the ownership and does not require $200k, just the willingness to figure a way to make it happen. And for some, its not a logical or maybe even the smartest move, but whenever I check in with myself, its still worth it.
Go for it, do it as long as you can, enjoy it and move on if it does not work financially. The real downside is not that big if you buy smart.
