so I'm driving to work one fine morning and ... without much fanfare my beloved boxer goes six on me - as in 6 cylinder apparently. It would accelerate, but without any grunt. The early diagnosis is I lost one bank perhaps due to fuel or spark. Not sure but there were some backfires which may be a result of unburned fuel getting through? Does this make sense? Anyone else had this happen?

    Any thoughts?

had it happen on the 512TR several times, usually if you just turn it off then restart it fires on 12 again

BB doesnt have the computers the 512TR has though, maybe the distributor cap ?

I checked your BB512i schematic, and that single-distributor, single-firing sensor, single-coil, single-ECU Dinoplex ignition system does not have an overall architecture that can fail easily on one bank only -- so I'd tend more towards one of the fuel pumps not working, but stranger things have happened, and putting a timing light on it to confirm/deny spark on both banks is a very logical first step.

If you would like to test the fuel pumps, you can remove the ...113 fuel pump relays (which are "relay for L.H. fuel pump" and "relay for R.H. fuel pump", and not the ...101 "Relay for fuel pumps") and touch a jumper wire from the 30 terminal in the socket (which will always be +12V -- even with the key "off") to the 87 terminal in the socket as shown in the jpeg and listen for fuel pump operation. If the 30 terminal in either relay socket is not always at +12V you should check the corresponding fuel pump fuses and (maybe more importantly) the fuse holders for those fuses for frazzlization ;).

    Good hunting!

    Mario,

This happened on my 330. Most likely ignition - bad cap, rotor or coil. One of the few problems that is straight forward enough to check yourself!

    Good luck!

    Steve,

Does the BB have a 12 point distributer?!? If so, what is the rotor set-up?

It could definately be fuel but, I didn't realize the pumps were set up to feed one bank each - darn these new fangled cars... :)

    Regards,

    Art S.

Yes, it shows a single 12-wire distributor cap with a single-finger rotor design.

We tend to cringe when we hear the word "Digiplex", but this "Dinoplex" system looks pretty reliable (if the ECU isn't fragile) -- a single, non-contact (variable reluctance?) trigger element inside the distributor "tells" the ECU to fire the single coil primary, and the advance is handled by the typical F mechanical stuff inside the distributor.

If Steve is correct then, it must be fuel.

    Thanks for the clarification Steve,

Had the exact same thing happen to my BBi.
Checked fuel pump fuses first (this is a common culprit) fuses were ok.
Turned out one of the fuel pumps had gone south.

early call as some of you have surmised is a fuel pump. It looks like the fuse melted. Usually that means fixing the fuse is not enough, but we'll see. Is replacing the fuel pump(s) an engine out thing?

Rather ironic as I always tell people who inquire about maintenance costs on thse cars...."Well, it's not too bad unless some part breaks, then it starts with...We drop the engine...$$$$"
