I suckered myself into believing that the ebay "stencil" for the Ferrari logo on the airbox lid might actually work. After 5 attempts, I have to say that it sucks.

I tried everything but the stencil can't be made to lie flat enough to avoid "overspray" underneath and, at least to me, making the results unacceptable.

Is there an actual decal/transfer available anywhere to make the lid look "as new?"

It looks far better just black than it does with that stencil crap applied.

Many have tried before with no sucess..it really needs to be silk screened on. If you want it done correctly and look factory like, it needs to be sent to Italian Car Parts, suck it up and pay the price. At least they restore the crinkle paint as well.

Actually I had really good success with it. Go buy some spray mount first. spray the back of the stencil ( ligthly ) let it get tacky and then place on the airbox. I used a flat piece of card board to press thightly on to the airbox. then spray. let it dry. then remove. once its dry use some alchohol to clean up the sticky residue.

You may need a bit of black on a paint brush to touch up some corners, but I only had to do one or two tiny spots.

I also had good luck with the stencil but I used an old body shop trick and borrowed some of my wifes hair spray, sprayed an even coat on the back of the stencil, let it tack up a bit then placed it on the airbox cover waited about 15 minutes then covered the rest of the airbox with paper, carefully tape it to the stencil. Add light coats of color. Best if you try a couple test pieces before you do the airbox, you need to be able to put enough hairspray on to make it stick everywhere but not enough to sqeeze out. Hairspray cleans up with warm water.

"Go buy some spray mount first"

What is "spray mount?" It makes sense to use some sort of adhesive to hold the stencil down that uses some different solvent to remove - like alcohol.

Further re the stencil: As I received it there are TWO stencils and you have to tape down/spray one and then, after that one is dry, align/tape down/spray the other. It seems incredibly more difficult than it should be and I don't understand why the seller made it that way. It just makes it that much more difficult to apply.

The first stencil has most of "Ferrari" but the second stencil has to overlay the first one (after it's painted) to complete the "middle" of the Ferrari logo. Totally bizarre and difficult to align - at least for me.

I would not recommend that anybody buy that stencil but if you got good results - with NO overspray underneath, then I'd be willing to try it again.

Charlie at Italian Car Parts sent me a loaner air box while he had mine re painted and silk screened. After 10 years it still looks better than the factory box after 5 years. This is the only way to go.

I redid my airbox a few years ago with the stencil. You guys are right that it is not an easy job. Took a couple of times doing over till it came out right. The stencil needs to be tight to the air box cover. Looks like some good ideas you guys tried. I weighted mine down with small pieces of steel. I think the hairspray idea would work good too. If you are easily frustrated then the stencil is not for you to try. Takes a lot of time to get it right. Buying a new redid one is the easy way to get a nice looking airbox. I just had the time so I thought I would try it. Could always get one already done if it didn't turn out. After the third time I was happy with the results.

Some tasks just need to be left to the professionals if you want to be completely satisfied with the results. Similar to a previous thread regarding restoring brake calipers. Doing it yourself will only get you 80% of the way to complete satisfaction. Think about it you have already wasted your time, which I would think is worth some $$$, plus the $20 for the stencil that can be used basically only once. Those $$$'s could have gone towards the ICP restoration. Yeah it's a rip off but is there an alternative??? Just my $0.02. Cheers

Another good trick is to use clear first. After getting the stencil in place, and the area prepped, spray clear paint first, this will seal the edges and any that bleeds under will not be noticeable because it is clear. After the clear is just about dry then spray the color coat. This works on all stencil projects.

I have a pic of it my graphic designer made. I've been meaning to go have a decal made or possibly a mask decal that I can stick on and paint over. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

His normal vinyl shop wouldn't make it because they said some of the pieces were too small to cut, but I think I can find a place that could do it.

Mine is a stencil job and it sucks.

I think someone is doing screen prints, maybe Bobileff Motorcar Co. or one of the other west coast shops.

Re having the stencil made - maybe the reason the ebay guy sells the two piece stencil has something to do with cutting the parts to make the "e" and the "a" in "Ferrari" and that's why you have to apply/paint two separate overlapping stencils.

I might try it one more time just for the heck of it - using hairspray to tack down the stencil.

Great idea but I would suspect it to be quite a challenge to lay down that vinyl onto the lid without issues. I think your guy is correct about the cuts especially those in the "ufi" portion.

Since I'm still possessed of that childish quality that expects most things to work as advertised, I was planning to buy that stencil - the listing says it works!

Then I'm outraged when I get ripped off!

(I'm not sure if my gullibility reflects more poorly on the advertisers who make inaccurate claims, or on me!)

So, I appreciate the info! Thanks for confirming what I probably knew already, deep down: That there's no "Quick and Easy" (or cheap!) fix if you want a Ferrari to look and work correctly.

For me - the high price notwithstanding - ItalianCarParts it is!

I believe the best job would be using two rubber stamps and high temp white paint rather than a decal. A small roller would ink the stamp. A jig for positioning the 2 stamps.

    A 5" x 2" stamp is only $30. I'll check on the artwork cost.

    Hi Paul.

I've made the "Ferrari Ufi..." drawing for the air filter housing. Just let me know if you need it for the stamp.

My 2 cents: the special wrinkle paint makes it very difficult to do the job properly. You need to retouch the final work. I've done it with the stencil; quite acceptable, but I've retouched it after.

I too, bought the eBay stencil, and read the advice here on the forum. Before I got to the project, I happened to cross paths with a guy who has a silkscreening business in town. He was able to make it work without too much hassle, and far cheaper than the Italian Car parts price.

Great job polishing the plenum. I usually like them painted, but that looks so good I am tempted to strip the paint off and try polishing like you did.

Did you do that yourself, or did you send it somewhere?

I did mine with excellent results on the second try. See my comments at post 16 on http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166422&highlight=airbox+logo

Also use some sort of spray on adhesive (I used a product from 3M) to hold the stencil flush on the airbox.

the stencil had to be made in two parts to allow for the centers of some of the letters to be made

I also used 3 coats of white spray paint (8 passes at 20/30 cms away per coat) to get a decent coverage, allowing 30 minutes drying time between coats. do all 3 coats before moving onto second part of stencil.

Prob the most difficult part is to align the two parts of the stencil but I found it a very satisfying job once done. 3 years later it looks as good as new.

    good luck

Like others who are DIYers, I used a tacky material on the back side and the stencil stayed flat. One secret is to go light on the paint and make a bunch of passes. The second stencil alignment takes patience. For 328 owners, the label is different from the 308 ones.

My mechanic did this for me. He thought it would look good. I think it does. We were going to do the cam covers and belt covers too but decided to just leave them natural Alum. When we did the service I was working 12 hours a day and didn't have the time. They were painted wrinkle black some time ago and the paint was starting to come off. I did the airbox myself. It took a long time but it was worth it. It turned out so nice my mechanic thought it was original. If you do your airbox take your time at it.
Before and after service pics. Detail of the airbox does not show up as good as it really is. I'd post a pic but the car is not here with me right now.

    That does look sweet!

Does anybody know what is correct on "i" cars? Mine is red, like a QV, but most of the ones I see are either black or silver.
